By the time you read this, you might know if Justin Barcia has somehow, improbably and amazingly, won the opening round of Monster Energy Supercross for the fourth straight year. It really doesn’t matter, though. Barcia has said he’d much rather not win the opener and win some more races throughout the season instead. He wants to contend for the championship right to the end. Of course he would. I also say that Barcia doesn’t even need to do either of those things. He doesn’t have to win the opener, and he doesn’t have to win the title. He has arrived at the sweet spot in his tenure with the Troy Lee Designs/ Red Bull GasGas team. As proof, they’ve re-upped him for two more years, taking his contract through the 2023 season.
