Thanks for the 2021 Racer X calendar and the look at 50 years of Pro Motocross. It’s one of the all-time best calendars I have ever seen. Seeing the Marty Smith photo from the 1977 500cc National Championship finale at St. Petersburg, Florida, gave me great memories, including the oddball shot of me in the background of the photo! I assisted the great announcer Dave Despain that day doing stats and occasional comments to give Dave a break on the microphone. I also attended the Honda victory dinner and drove Marty and his wife, Nancy, and teammate Tommy Croft to the restaurant. Marty came up from the back seat to shift the rental car into reverse while we were on the way. Marty later told me he was impressed I didn’t panic and stayed on the gas until the car started to go backward!
