Good day DC! Please review the attached picture of the August 2020 Marty Smith cover above an original Honda Elsinore 125 promotional brochure from 1974. I’ve believed that poster was Marty from early on in the 125 MX championship campaign, but couldn’t find any info that he ran #206 that year. In searching that year, he has the #1 plate and no evidence of any other number. Can you confirm that this is Marty running the 206? Also, it appears to be at Carlsbad-which would have been early in the season-can you confirm that? Thanks for the help!

(Shawn, I remember those old Honda posters from 1974 and I have them as well, but #206 was actually Gaylon Mosier, Marty’s teammate that year. Smith wore #522 in ’74 when he won his first 125 National Championship; Mosier raced in the 250 Class. Here’s the thing: The only time the 125 and 250 classes both raced on the same day and at the same track was the season-opener at Hangtown, but at that point Honda Elsinores were still production silver, not works red. However, at the end of that summer a 250 Inter-Am race was held at Zoar Motocross Park in Springfield, NY, along with a 125 World Cup race. Both of these Honda poster photos almost certainly came from that race, Marty on the red 125, Gaylon on the 250. Honda also made schoolbook covers out of these shots that they gave away to kids at Honda dealerships. DC)
