Reason For Being
When 2025 ended and the calendar flipped to the new year, the AMA’s new minimum age for a professional license to compete in Monster Energy Supercross or Pro Motocross kicked in. No longer will 16-year-old riders be eligible to compete. The rule will change again in 2027 when the minimum age moves up to 18 for either division. The changes were deemed necessary by the AMA and the respective series organizers due to the ongoing insurance crisis that has hit the sport at every level, making it especially difficult to insure minors in professional competition. Competitors who got their licenses before the new year will be grandfathered in, but beginning in 2027, every applicant will have to be at least 18 years old.
