I have been blessed to work the Pro Motocross nationals at Budds Creek for 26 years thru the Southern Maryland Dirt Riders (SMDR). The Racer X article [“Risky Business,” October 2022] on the first Bubba Scrub in competition—at the time I was a flagger at Budds and was assigned to cover Henry Hill. The track was being run backwards (clockwise) that year. James Stewart #259 Kawasaki was WOT up the face of Henry Hill, and the next thing I know I’m looking at James Stewart’s skid plate cresting Henry Hill—the bike was pancaked! I had never seen a move like that in the seven years of flagging, so I knew this wasn’t going to be pretty. I had the red cross flag up and getting ready to wave it, then James landed it rubber side down. The rest is history. To be blessed to witness that first scrub will be an unforgettable memory. Thank you to MX Sports for all your hard work and dedication, and thank you Tim Cotter and Ezra Beasley for awarding the Moto Hero Award to me in 2019.

Have you ever considered having a Hollywood set designer type and paint supercross jumps/whoops sides with some organic paint? You could give better depth of view to spectators, which would give greater appreciation to the average fan. Great ROI for little cost, if you catch my drift.

Hi Brett, thanks for the suggestion. I don’t really have much to do with Monster Energy AMA Supercross, but I know the folks who do and will gladly pass this suggestion along. Personally, I’ve always thought it would be cool to project logos on the downside of takeoff jumps, the projector angled in a way that won’t affect the riders’ eyes. I guess I could pass that along too! DC
