After 250 East division title contender RJ Hampshire crashed out of his heat race in spectacular fashion—his rear wheel caught by a wire on the side of the track—I quickly ran over to his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna truck for an update. As the pit reporter for the live broadcast on Peacock, this was my job. Inside the rig, RJ gave me a thumbs up, indicating he was okay. His trainer, Aldon Baker, provided some scoop. The team handed me the rear wheel jammed with wire as a prop. Later that afternoon, after interviewing the heat race winner, Jason Thomas threw it to me. As soon as I began to explain what happened, my microphone lost signal. I was unable to file that report, or any others, because two hours later the original mic and two backups still weren’t working.
“We apologize; this is not your fault,” said my producer. Well, it might have been my fault. A week earlier, I had tempted the karma gods. Fortunately for you, everything I didn’t get to say on TV in Salt Lake, I can now share right here in ink.
