The 2023 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship started with a bang. Eli Tomac, the defending series champion, overcame a funky mid-race crash while leading to rebound and win the sold-out Anaheim season-opener for the first time in his long and successful career. It was the beginning of a steady run of wins and podiums that would have the veteran leader of the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing team poised to claim a third 450SX title in the last four years. Tomac was enjoying this title run so much that he even decided to commit to AMA Pro Motocross this summer and a full run at the inaugural SuperMotocross World Championship, set to take place in September. He was winning, he was healthy, and he was having fun. What could possibly go wrong?
