Riders’ Meeting
MOTOCROSS REVIVAL
May 15, 2022 // San Bernardino, CA // Glen Helen Raceway // By Dennis Cox
Every generation of motocross racer has a slightly different view of the history of the sport. Old-school MXers like myself remember when it first became popular in the seventies, and our heroes were mostly the Europeans who brought this form of mechanized entertainment to our shores. People like the plucky Belgians—Roger De Coster, Harry Everts, and Joel Robert. Then of course there were the no-nonsense Swedes: Torsten Hallman, Bengt Aberg, Hakan Carlqvist, and Ake Jonsson. And let’s not forget the fearless Finn, Heikki Mikkola. But then the American MX racers soon began to catch up.
It wasn’t long before the next generation of racers from the good ol’ USA began to dominate the sport. Marty Smith, Bob Hannah, Gary Jones, Johnny O’Mara, Broc Glover, Jeremy McGrath, “Rocket” Rex Staten, Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, and a host of other hot-shot MX racers were our new heroes. Enter David Dewhurst and the Motocross Revival.
