Thanks for printing my letter regarding past U.S. World Champions. I stand corrected, missing the titles from Schmit, Parker, and Moore. I meant to say “open” class, big-bore bikes only. After all, we know that’s the premier class in the sport both in the U.S. and abroad. I am correct in saying the U.S. have only one big-bore title in the record books, that being Brad Lackey’s 500cc 1982 title, 41 years ago! Like the cover of Racer X says, “It’s About Damn Time” for a second United States open-class world title. See you at Lucas Oil Stadium in March!

Right on, Shawn, but I would say that in the years that Parker (’91) and Schmit (’92) won their 250cc World Championships, that class had replaced the big-bores as the premier Grand Prix classification. Either way, you’re right—it’s been too long since an American won a world title! DC
