What a moto for Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto. He didn't get the world's greatest start, but it still didn't take him long to get to the front. Check out his scorching best lap and average lap times compared to everyone everyone else's! Villopoto got around Dungey on lap three and yanked the lead from Josh Grant on lap four. There was simply no response to his charge, not even from the defending champ, and after Dungey DNF'd, RV won the race by nearly half a minute over James Stewart. Check out the chart below to see just how fast Villopoto was going in those opening laps.
Lap | Ryan Villopoto | Ryan Dungey | Josh Grant |

How about Josh Grant? He had a great fastest lap and even led the first three laps of the race. Sure, he dropped off the pace a little bit after Villopoto took the lead away, but his times stayed pretty consistent after that. If he continues to improve and get good starts, perhaps we'll see him battling up front more often.
Andrew Short had another good first moto, taking fourth in this one. His lap times weren't especially amazing, and he had a little help from Canard (crash) and Dungey (mechanical DNF), but thanks to solid and consistent laps he was there to take advantage. Laps two through seven were all in the 2:21's and 2:22's, while laps nine through twelve were all in the 2:26 range. On thirteen through fifteen, he even dropped back into the 2:24 range. Not many riders lower their times in the final three laps of the race!
Justin Barcia's results aren't head snapping on paper, but when you consider that he came from outside the top thirty after a first-turn crash, this moto was pretty good. Plus, his bike was mangled after that crash. True, his fastest lap and average time aren't dazzling, but c'mon, the dude was coming through traffic the whole time!

A holeshot from James Stewart used to spell the end of the race, but these days it usually means that at some point we're going to see him battle with either (or both) of the Ryans, and that's exactly what happened in the second moto at RedBud. To the delight of the hordes of seriously drunken rowdy RedBud fans, heavyweights Stewart and Villopoto put on one of the best battles for the lead of the whole year. After the race Villopoto said that Stewart's initial pace was fast enough to make passing extremely difficult. But on lap lap six, Stewart's lap time increased and Villopoto made the pass. Dungey followed suit on the next lap. Stewart responded by lowering his times, and it appeared that he was slowly reeling Dungey back in, but it was not to be and his times started getting consistently higher than the Ryans' on lap thirteen. Stewart says lapped traffic got him. The chart below illustrates the battle, as you can see they each had good and bad moments during the race, with lines and lappers probably playing a big factor for all three. No matter how, it made for a good race.

Good day for Justin Brayton, who went 6-8 for sixth overall. Brayton started well in the second moto and put in solid laps throughout the whole moto. His lap times weren't on the same specacular level of the leaders, but they were also free of any major spikes and didn't increase dramatically on the final two to three laps, which is a common occurence for some riders.
Even though you don't see Jake Weimer's name on the list of the ten fastest lap setters, it doesn't mean he wasn't going fast. Weimer had a disastrous start to the moto and ended the first lap in twenty-third place, meaning he had to work through traffic the whole time to eventually end up thirteenth. His best time was only a 2:24.019, but his average time was a 2:25.578, which isn't too bad, considering the situation.
Josh Grant had a breakout ride at RedBud.

For the first half of the year it seemed that Eli Tomac couldn't buy a win in the first moto, while rival Ken Roczen seemed to struggle in the second. But in the last two rounds, it seems the two have traded places. Tomac was once again ridiculously fast in the first moto at RedBud, coming in with a margin of victory of just over eighteen seconds in front of Roczen. Surprisingly, barring the last two laps and lap six, the two had pretty comparable lap times, as shown in the chart below. It's too bad Roczen didn't start as well as Tomac because if he had, we might have seen one heck of a battle.

Check out how close the fast laps of Cooper Webb and Adam Cianciarulo are. Webb beat Cianciarulo soundly in this moto, but at least his heated amateur rival can say he turned a faster lap!
The Jeremy Martin vs. Marvin Musquin battle for third was definitely one of the best matchups of the moto. The two were going at it like a pair of Canadians scrapping over the world's last spoonful of maple syrup! (And by that we don't mean they were politely explaining to one another why they deserved the spot, Canadian-style). Martin found himself behind Musquin on lap six and finished the moto on lap fifteen, less than quarter of a second behind the Frenchman. See what it looked like on paper below.

Hey look at Cole Seely everyone! The supercross specialist is proving he can be competitive in long, torturous motos on rough motocross tracks as well. Seely finished in the top five for the first time this year, and he earned it too. He rounded the first lap in eighth place and had to go around Zach Osborne, Adam Cianciarulo and Wil Hahn to take fifth, setting the fifth-fastest lap of the moto in the process.

At first it appeared that Tomac was on his way to battling with Roczen before going down on lap three, which allowed Roczen, who took the lead on the same lap, to open up a big lead. Roczen took advantage, and while Tomac was fighting through traffic the German was busy opening up an insurmountable gap. By lap ten it had grown to 13.607 seconds and Roczen appeared to switch over to managment mode. Tomac being Tomac, he continued to charge and started taking sizable chunks out of Roczen's lead, but the gap was too large, and despite some blazing laps from Tomac, Roczen won the moto by just over seven seconds.
Kyle Cunningham charged to the front in both motos.
Simon Cudby photo
Hell of a charge from Kyle Cunningham in both motos. Cunningham went down in the first moto and charged back up to seventh from roughly thirtieth, setting the sixth-fastest lap along the way. In the second moto he experienced another crash and was forced to come from way back once again. He finished eighth this time and set the ninth-fastest lap of the moto. Unfortunately, crashes have become a bit of a regular occurence for Cunningham, who regularly posts fast, consistent laps. If he can keep it together, he's capable of busting into the top five.
Zach Osborne has developed an intersting trend this year that held true at RedBud. He's seemed to struggle a bit in the first motos, yet is often able to come back strong in the second. At RedBud, his fastest lap in moto two (2:20.032) was faster than his fastest lap in moto one (2:21.375), and his average lap time in moto two (2:23.402) was faster than his average time in moto one (2:25.983) as well. His score for the day? 10-5 for fifth overall.
