Josh Grant nailed the holeshot in the second 450 moto, but James Stewart took command of the lead soon after. Stewart put himself in a much better position than the first moto, where he struggled to keep himself inside the top fifteen without goggles. He wasn’t home free yet, though. Ryan Dungey followed Grant in third place, and right behind him was Ryan Villopoto.
Dungey was able to get by Grant after a few laps, and Villopoto made the move as well just a half lap later. Villopoto made a calculated pass on Dungey by slamming on the binders and cutting an inside line in the corner following the infield triple. Villopoto and Dungey charged for the next couple of laps to close up the gap Stewart had made. The three riders were in a race of their own—Grant had disappeared from the picture. The three past champions had such a close battle going that all of them were in the air as they crossed the finish line. This was the battle the fans were waiting for, but it ended before it really even began. Stewart slowed suddenly on Bradshaw Boulevard, appeared to be having bike issues and then rushed into the mechanics area. Stewart was unable to return to the track due to mechanical issues.
Without Stewart in the hunt, Villopoto and Dungey went toe-to-toe. Dungey was riding aggressively, but dropped back after making a couple of bobbles in corners. Villopoto was riding extremely smooth, so those mistakes cost Dungey any chance he would’ve had at the lead. Villopoto kept inching away until they brought out the checkered flag.
Josh Grant fell back quite a few spots, which left Mike Alessi as the next rider to inherit third place. Tyla Rattray moved up and stayed on Alessi for numerous laps, but couldn’t make anything happen. It didn’t matter, though. Rattray’s fourth place was enough to get him an overall podium position. Trey Canard also had a decent ride. He started outside of the top ten and moved up to fifth.
Villopoto took home another first-place trophy with perfect moto scores, while Dungey finished runner-up and Rattray secured third with 4-4 moto scores.
