Bench Racing Ammo: All-Time SX Win List

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 | 11:35 AM
We all know Jeremy McGrath is the all-time King of Supercross with a ridiculous 72 career wins. But we haven't checked in on the rest of the spots in awhile. How far up the ladder have current riders like James Stewart, Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey gone?

Check out the updated All-Time SX wins list for this week's Bench Racing Ammo.

Ryan Villopoto is currently three wins behind Bob Hannah for sixth all-time.

Is this 'updated' list reflecting 2012 supercross victories? I don't see any of those. And wow, calling MC a prima donna. That's like saying Larocco was out of shape. MC rips, indoors and out.

Any talk about MC's total ever being beat is rediculous. RV needs 49 more wins to get there! FOURTY NINE WINS! Anybody think RV is going to race 5 more seasons? And stay healthy and win 10 RACES PER SEASON? As much as I'd like to see him do it...no way. When MC and 4 raced, it was TOTAL AND UTTER DOMINATION. RV isn't dominating like that. He's Great...but he's also got solid competition. RV is the best rider these days, but those other guys push him to the absolute edge. No way to stay on 2 over the long haul racing like that.

@ tonewall X 2

In the same way McGraths starts are what helped him win the record and Larocco to lose it. Plus short mains which make it almost impossible for another good rider with a poor start to catch him. Till RC anyway. After watching the endurocross at Vegas live streaming I have pretty much lost interest in the lack of real racing in supercross. Plus back in the day , heaven forbid anyone would try to throw an elbow or show a wheel on MC . It was almost like other riders conceded before the gate dropped. Until RC who was at the dawning of his career and MC at the twilight. Not taking anything away but would have been more impressed if he had about 50 outdoor national wins. Still a great rider with so much natural talent and relaxed mental side. Pressure never really showed anyway.

Only 35 riders in history have won 2 or more SX races is crazy thinking were approaching 40 years now...40 rides qualify for the program each event ....no other sport I can think of breeds 1-3 elite athletes who completely dominate for a decade..I think of a lot of riders who just peaked out a half second a lap off the guy who wins...2011 was hopefully a sign of things to come when you get a season with multiple riders getting multiple wins...I bet money we have 6 riders get a win this year ..rv stew rd reed Barcia canard.....but if your not one of those guys ...I'd say you may never reach the podium...the top spot is so elite this year a win in this field is truly gonna be earned and not given

This is an epic list of Moto hero's. MC is a legend. Those who dare talk stink about him have some serious issues they need to work out with themselves! (shout out to sethro and the boys!!!)

The stats are pretty interesting though. RV has an average of 8 wins a year and RC has a total of 48 wins in 7 years. RV's year to year average is 1 win higher than the Goat. This could be interesting if RV can keep that average up for another 4 years. His 3 year contract contraversy could come into play though, will he retire at that point? Go ride some GP's maybe?

JS7 has 4 wins to pass the Goat. I am positive that stat puts a real fire in his belly. They are close in year to year average.

JMB has a pretty solid average as well but, as the story has been told with him he had other aspirations. Too bad because a french flag would look pretty good on that list towards the top. Not because I love france but, just to create some motivation for our riders.

I had no idea KW had that many wins. He is so dang awsome.

RD has some work to do. No doubt he will climb up that list and I am sure it will mirror his riding style of slow and steady. I wonder if he will ride pumpkins for his entire career?

When did chuck sun win a supercross? I find it pretty hilarious when i see him lurking around the track. How the heck did he manage to be at MXON in the right place to dig out Barcia? That was so funny. What was going through the mind of Decoster when that was happening? Was he cursing him or thanking him? Did chuck know about the outside help rule? Im glad that green fencing is gone.

Brrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap! (If i added a bar at the end of that would Ping send me a box?)

I lost all respect for MC years ago, as "new talent" displaced his former dominance. I'll never forget MC intentionally running JS7 off the track around in 2006....MC could not run up front anymore, so he resorted to riding like a punk.

I like how guys use LaRocco as the epitome of the hard working outdoor rider and completely forget that at the end of his career he was indoor only just like many others before and after. Dude was awesome, so is Windham, can't fault them for prolonging their career by doing it part time. Hell, if I could skip my job for half the year I'd be on it like a pack of dogs on a three legged cat!

So, I think you guys are being way too hard on the Supermac. He DID, after all, win an outdoor title. Pretty sure that everyone baggin' on him for not wanting to ride outdoors can't say that. If you read the headline for this story, it doesn't include the outdoors either. So really, perhaps that shouldn't have been mentioned in the first place. According to the article, that would be irrelevant. And, if MC weren't the type of outstanding(for lack of a better word) ambassador that he was and still is I could maybe handle some ridcule. But that is NOT the case, by anymeans. He has done nothing but good for this sport and if he chose not to race, that would be HIS choice, it's his life. Shame on the negative comments to the king of supercross, if that were all I had to complain about, I would feel pretty darn good...

I don't think Stewart or Reed will ever catch RC for all time wins in SX, RV has a punchers chance, but I doubt he will get 4 more full seasons in to do it.

I think the best shot of ever catching RC will be Tomac or Barcia,

As far as Dungey, I think he is the only rider who could ever have a chance of winning an SX title and still not win a single race.

For those that Bag on Stewart vs. MC I thinnk its funny, they have the same personality.

I'm not liking this trash talking McGrath or Larocco. McGrath has done more for motox and Superx than any other rider ever, including RC. Wow, the people have forgotten him as quickly as Honda and Yamaha did.. What a shame. Jeremy was right when he said racing was cutthroat and after your last race people move on.

Nobody on this board could carry McGrath or laroccos underwear. Not even their man bra.

JonR145 wrote: 4:05pm December 5, 2012

I highly encourage people to read McGrath’s book “Wide Open: A Life in Supercross.” It is a great book and you see that he, like so many other riders, did NOT have success handed to him on a silver platter. He worked his butt off, his family made huge sacrifices, and he struggled to get recognized early on in his career.

McGrath is not only a good guy, he continues to be a part of the sport and “give back” through his ongoing involvement with Honda, training riders, and his Team. The guy is and always will be a legend. That SX win record will most likely be like RC’s outdoor record – one that simply won’t be surpassed.

I dont see the top 4 ever changing.
JS7 will probably get to second but I dont see CR22 getting 7 more wins to get into third.
The field is too stacked now.
Right now you have RV2, JS7, CR22, TC41, RD5 and Barcia and Windham and in the next couple of years Tomac and Wilson and people like BB4 and numerous others.

It just looks too hard to dominate from now going forward.

And also agree with someones point earlier about how they ride now.
When Mc, RC and JS dominated seasons they were able to ride at 80% for half the race.
You cannot do that now and win main events.

As fans we are very fortunate right now.

Yes, BillC.. RC could be 4th in total wins by the end of the season, but THE MOST IMPORTANT record he will still be in 2nd in titles.. RC has 48 wins, but 5 titles..Stewie and Reed are right there, but WAAAAY back in titles.. Like I always say, those wins mean nothing without the title at the end..

Profile Picture

As hard as it is to win those titles, as evident by top riders like Stewie and Reed only having two each, it shows how much of a legend Mcgrath is. 7 titles, unreal.. And RC with 5 is also incredible...

I'm surprised O'Mara "only" has 7 wins. He won the title one year, and was in contention a few others.

I think Reed would need 2 seasons to make it past RC. I seem him as a contender, but 7 wins in a deep field will be tough in 2013. Stewart.. ahh.. let me predict after say Round 6.

@ManiacXtrem

Yeah, really short mains . At 1:05 laps its only a 20 minute main . Funny thing is several of the supercross races last year were running 47 seconds a lap except for the last coast to the checkers lap. One supercross had a total elapsed lap time of 16 minutes. 16 minutes barely makes a good heat race let alone a good main. Like a fart in a frying pan, its over. Poof . Daytona is fun to watch as the track changes , is rough, conditioning is actually a factor . Add in the fact they do not smooth Daytona like they do the stadium tracks. Lap times almost double .

I think they should have two mains for a combined score. At least the guy who started poorly in the first could turn things around for the second. As it stands now if you start in the top three you have a good chance of winning.

I do prefer outdoors to SX...but anyone saying SX is for wussies and MX is the mans sport has obviously never ridden a SX track. Likely way too scared to triple (let along double) or blast a set of whoops. It is hard and, with the relatively shorter race, intense. Maybe you don;t need to be in th esame kind of shape as you do for Outdoors, but you still need to be in damn good shape. Beating up MC as some kind of wuss for 'prefering manicured tracks' (doubt he ever actually said that...even if it was true, he was too smart to say such things) is ignorance of how hard SX is and the size of balls required to do it (let alone do it at race speed with 19 other dudes). And they clearly have forgotten MC's outdoor title (which he damn near repeated - and came very close another year). And that his 15 (I think?) outdoor wins puts him in the top...15? best outdoor riders ever. Why is it a rule we cannot just be fans of all these guys? We HAVE to pick one and then rag all others? Dig the sport!

Whoops_Blitzer wrote: 9:22pm December 5, 2012

@bill c

Never. Not in a single season, anyway. It's gonna be tough for any one guy to get five or more wins this year, let alone two of them.

You guys that don't think Stewart can get Ricky are cracking me up pretty good. He got two wins this year, in by far his worst season ever. There's nowhere for him to go but up. (Of course, that's what I thought last year...) He maybe only has two seasons left, though, so there could definitely be problems with my prediction if he gets injured.

I think RV can match RC's indoor titles. If he three-peats this year, which is fairly likely, he'll be looking real good.

I wish that the 450 Supercross mains were 25 minutes plus 2laps and the 250 mains were 20 minutes plus 2 laps. Last years sub minute lap times there were to many 15 minute mains. With what it cost for a family to go to a Supercross race. Race fans deserve to see a longer race.

Johnson along with Hannah would have both been in the 40+ wins and Bailey would have had many more wins, if not for injury. While Hannah's was not a motorcycle injury, it just goes to show that stuff happens. That is why, when you look at MC's record, it stand out even more. For most of his career, Jeremy rode both in and out doors, the last four were supercross only, where carnage is the rule and yet he stayed out of harms way.Amazing!!

Stewart and Reed will both have a chance to pass RC, James maybe this year and Chad next year, but it will be tough. Mainly because of RV, who has the talent to win half the races, leaving only 8 or 9 race wins for Barcia, Canard, Dungey, Reed, Stewart and the rest of the field to battle over.

Forecasters say there is another Perfect Storm on the horizon, its called the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross Series!!!!

You may think of MC as mostly a supercross specialist racer, but whether he was outdoors at the nationals, at a USGP, or the MXdeN, ...He was just about always the FASTEST MOTOCROSS racer at the gate.

Things to consider:

1) MC raced 2 full years more than RC(RC missed the entire 2003 season). Also RC retired at his peak to go 4 wheelin and would have won many more races had he continued.

2) Stewart and Reed are going to have a much harder time passing RC than most people would think. Beating RV,RD,TC,JB, and each other 5 and 7 times respectively won't happen in my opinion. Oh yeah, then next year add Tomac, Wilson and other young talent. I think the days of winning 10 or 12 races in a year are going to be hard to come by going forward.

3) Considering the parity today, does any of the riders lining up at A1 have a chance to break MC's 72? I don't see how...
