New Career Numbers
Four riders—Cooper Webb, Joey Savatgy, Aaron Plessinger and Alex Martin—earned career numbers for 2017. Let’s take a look at what they picked.
2 – Cooper Webb
This is a big one, as Webb decided to follow in the footsteps of Jeremy McGrath and Ryan Villopoto. Webb had first choice, so he could have stayed with his familiar 17, but instead went with #2.
17 – Joey Savatgy
Savatgy takes over Webb’s old number 17.
Note: Savatgy earned a career number in 2015 for the 2016 season. There is a new rule in place that allows you to change your career number once. Savatgy used that rule to change from #37 to #17.
23 – Aaron Plessinger
This number should look familiar, as Plessinger ran #23 last year.
26 – Alex Martin
Like Plessinger, Martin decides to stick with the same number for 2017.
Rookies
Austin Forkner (24) and Benny Bloss (34)—the 2016 AMA Motocross Rookies of the Year—claimed the highest numbers among rookies. Forkner, who didn’t race supercross, is the lowest non-career number next season.
Sipes Chugging Along
Ryan Sipes is no longer a full-time AMA Motocross and Supercross rider. Ryan Sipes is a full-time off-road rider. Yet, Sipes continues to show up at a few Lucas Oil Pro Motocross events and earn a top 100 number. This year, Sipes raced just one round (Ironman), but earned #97 for 2017.
