Yeah…Toronto! The Monster Energy Supercross series came back to the Great White North this year after a year away and I, being Canadian and all, couldn’t have been happier. I can’t thank the guys at Feld…enough for returning the series back to the SkyDome. It’s a really cool city, nice dome, the crowd is big and it’s one of my favorite races of the year.

Yeah, I’m biased, but JT or Weege are as American as it comes (these colors don’t run) and they love this round. I was a bit worried the series wouldn’t come back because the Blue Jays, the baseball team that plays in the dome, are installing a dirt infield for this year, which includes jackhammering the concrete to lay down a permanent base of dirt. I thought that would stop supercross from coming, but I guess not. I know the owners of the team are considering a total grass infield which would definitely prevent a race track from being built, but I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen.

I liked the track this weekend. The dirt was a bit old-school in terms of being loose and more outdoor-ish. The whoops were big again (boo on knocking them down for the night show…why? Why? Why???) and there were some rhythms that were a bit tricky. Dirt Wurx has built a lot of diagonal lanes across the stadium floors this year and I’m fine with it. Not sure if it does anything or not but it’s a different viewing angle for fans in the stands. I was talking to a father of a big star and he told me that different Dirt Wurx guys build the tracks, so it all depends on who’s working at the time as to how the jumps are. Weird, right? Anyways, clearly the guy that specializes in making steep jump faces was in charge this week as the rhythms threw you pretty high. There was also a quad out there that I saw one guy do, although I heard there may have been more. As you know, I enjoy when there’s an obstacle out there that very few of these superheroes can jump.

Roczen and his peers are proving starts are somehow even more important than ever!
Roczen and his peers are proving starts are somehow even more important than ever! Cudby

Also the bowl turn before the big set of whoops was so big and beautiful during track walk that I just wanted to go and lay in it. It was like a wave at north shore just building up over you. Perfection!

I guarantee you you’re not going to read any other race report that just used 42 words to describe a bowl turn but I’m telling you, it was awesome.

Maybe we’re just in a new era of supercross where you can’t cut through the pack no matter where you are and make a podium. For so long, guys like Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Chad Reed or James Stewart has such superior skill that they could start anywhere and get on the podium and maybe even win the race. Trust me, as a former mechanic for Nick Wey and Tim Ferry this hurts me to type, but maybe it’s true.

But let’s look at today. Take for example Ken Roczen. Last week in Daytona he came around after lap one in tenth and could only get up to fifth. In Atlanta he was sixteenth after lap one and got up to sixth. The week before that he won the whole shebang. I can’t tell you how many times I saw MC, RC, JS or CR start in those same positions as Roczen did the last two weeks and at least salvage a podium if not win the race. They were just that much better than the other guys. The field nowadays is just so fast that the entire race comes down to the start. We’ve always known that the start is huge and so important but could it be MORE important than ever before? Is that even possible?

Roczen won Toronto in a great ride, but did he get so much better this week from the last two? No, he got a start and used his speed and skill to get by both Ryan Dungey and Eli Tomac. Once he got into the lead, he laid down some really fast laps to get three seconds clear seemingly right away. From there he managed a rapidly deteriorating race track perfectly to take his third win of the year and close up five points on Dungey, who’s still got this title well in hand. Roczen has gone 1-5-6-1 at the last five races. I like that we have this parity but it’s going to take me some time to get my head wrapped around it after so many years of going to the races and watching the same dudes finish on the box no matter what.

Marvin Musquin took second place when Dungey lost the front end late in the race after the first set of whoops. The Frenchman has really been on a roll here lately. He’s earned full marks for his last three weeks of riding where he’s gone 2-3-2. We’ve seen this before from guys like Cole Seely and Justin Brayton—they get hot for a month or so before losing a bit of that edge and struggle to get back up there. We’ll see what happens with Marvin but right now, he’s on fire.

The mystery that is Eli Tomac continued this week as his up and down ways continued all in one night. Remember he won last week in a dominating display that made some of us think his inconsistency was over with. Others wondered if the difference last week was simply Daytona, which would seem to suit Eli’s strengths.

He won his heat in Toronto in a great ride (faster than the other heat by the way) and then started well in the main. This is all good. He passed Ryan Dungey early to grab the lead. This is getting great! He won last week, the dirt was loose and outdoor-ish and he was now in the lead. Everything was set up for his competition to be reading “The Book of Eli” on how he won two in a row.

Yeah. Figure this one out.
Yeah. Figure this one out. Cubdy

But then…he didn’t. Tomac said after the race that he thought his heart rate spiked when Justin Bogle’s flying CRF450 almost hit him. He also said the pass by Roczen on him “came out of nowhere” and he never really recovered. Tomac slipped back to second, third, fourth, fifth before the checkers flew. And he might have been sixth or seventh had the race gone a couple more laps. It was another night of frustrating ups and downs for Tomac.

I sat next to Eli on the flight from Toronto to Denver on Sunday up in first class (seriously, if you were Eli, who would be worse than me to sit beside on a four hour flight? Satan? The ghost of Hitler?) Anyways, Eli is a good dude, we didn’t talk much but trust me when I say he’s as frustrated as you fans of his. You know he’s working hard, he’s back in Colorado now which makes him happy and hey, he won Daytona!

I got a text from someone down on the floor that I should check out Tomac’s KYB forks and so I headed down to the Kawasaki rig to ask some questions. The Kawasaki guys told me I couldn’t look at the bike which led me to say now I’m going to have to get a photographer to shoot me a photo of the fork caps to see what’s going on. It was then that the Kawasaki guys admitted that Tomac switched to spring forks. It’s a bit odd since he’s coming off a win on the air forks but I’m not surprised. Any reader of this column knows that I predicted that if things didn’t go better for the #3, there would be changes. The Tomacs have not been scared to switch things up on their motorcycle over the years.

Air/one spring/two springs…who cares? The teams and riders aren’t pumped when the media reports these things. Why? I’m not really sure. Yeah, they may not like bikes that come with air forks on production have spring forks on the race bike but newsflash here, the bikes at the dealer also don’t have the other 863 things on it that a factory bike does.

The 250SX main event was beyond crazy. A massive first turn crash took out just about everyone not named Shane McElrath or Justin Hill. After tough starts to his first two races, Hill was probably overjoyed with starting second behind his teammate. From there he made the move on his buddy and took off for a commanding win. He was fastest qualifier, he won his heat and his second career 250SX win probably couldn’t have come much easier.

Hill’s had an up and down career so far. You may remember him being a bit of a surprise pick for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit team a few years back. Mitch Payton at times was as frustrated with Justin as I’ve ever seen him. That first year was rough and if he hadn’t had a two year deal with PC, he would’ve been out of there. In 2014 though Justin turned it around, won a race and looked approximately 47 percent better. And with his contract up, Payton wanted him back—badly.

A few sources said that Hill was flying in the pre-season. They were correct.
A few sources said that Hill was flying in the pre-season. They were correct. Cudby

But KTM wanted him badly, too, and they blew the money Kawasaki was offering out of the water. Hill went to orange where he promptly got hurt before the season and struggled throughout the year outside of a strong second place at Glen Helen. It was weird, Justin was fast in SX practice last year, he would win heats but in the mains, he couldn’t get it done. People around him said he was still struggling with injury but then the kid would blitz practice or a heat, which made you wonder what exactly the injury was.

With the consolidating of the KTM 250 program to TLD, Hill was off the factory team and I heard he wasn’t pumped about this move. But I also heard from a bunch of different people that don’t know each other that he was flying in pre-season. And so far, through three races these people are right. He’s been great so far and I wouldn’t be surprised if this win gives him the confidence he needs to grab control of this title.

Let’s take a look at the results shall we?

250SX East Region Results

1- Justin Hill, KTM 250SX-F Factory- Hill was the only guy to wear a jacket on the parade lap and he won the damn race. What does that mean? I DON’T KNOW!

2- Jeremy Martin, Yamaha YZ250F- J Mart was DOWN IN THE FIRST TURN and got this finish. Wow. And, oh hey, have you noticed that Jeremy’s whoop game has improved this year?

3- Matthew Bisceglia, Suzuki RM-Z250- This was a great ride for a guy that crashed and broke his collarbone twice before the season started. Matt’s off the factory train and needs to establish himself as someone that can get back in with these big teams. And as I said, his pre-season prep probably couldn’t have gone any worse unless a piano fell on him. So to get this result, albeit with some help, is awesome for him and his team.

4- Alexander Frye, KTM 250SX-F Factory- Yeah, man, I’m with you guys in that I had no idea how Frye got fourth! It was that kind of night but props to Alex for his ride and he’s had a nice start to his season to which not that much was expected.

5- Jesse Wentland, Honda CRF 250- A great start to the season by the privateer just got a lot better with this finish. Jesse told me after the race he was stoked to avoid the carnage in the first turn but then he promptly crashed in the second turn! Wentland’s been very good this year and had he not had Tonus crash into him at round one, he’d be top five in the points. Pay attention to this kid.

6- Malcolm Stewart, Honda CRF 450- Mookie had a night that he probably won’t forget. He won the heat but had Aaron Plessinger accuse him of a dirty move off the start, then he was the cause of a massive first turn crash in the main, pulled into the mechanic’s area twice to fix a bent up bike and an ignition problem (props to GEICO guys for figuring it out and cutting the kill switch wire) and then somehow pulled out a sixth! If he wins this title, it will be because of this result because for ten laps, it was going so, so bad for Mookie. And yes, I think Plessinger did have a right to be a bit upset with Mookie for his heat race cutover. It wasn’t done on purpose to knock Aaron down but Mookie knew that a move like that could be a problem.

7- Benny Bloss, Yamaha YZ250F- Bloss didn’t have his bike in gear when the gate dropped. Yes, I’m serious. Anyways, it all worked out for him when he avoided the carnage from Mookie’s crash and dipped to the inside and instead of coming around the first lap in twenty-second, he was sixth! Nice move, Ben, nice move.

8- Gannon Audette, Kawasaki KX 250F- Audette’s a quiet guy on and off the track. All he does is get good results and get no attention. I thought that might change this week as with all the nuttiness, he ran fourth for a few laps and like everyone else out there, probably made a mistake to drop back later in the race.

9- Paul Coates, Honda CRF 250- Again, like Audette he was lost in the carnage of the race but a top ten is a top ten. Pip pip cheerio indeed!

10- Arnaud Tonus, Kawasaki KX 250F- Tonus went 3-3-1 in that rhythm off the start and he over-jumped the last three, plowed into the one and snapped his head back big time. It looked like it seriously hurt and slowed him for a bit. How do you say ‘Whiplash’ in French?

11- Tyler Bowers, Kawasaki KX 250F- The Bear had an eventful weekend with a nasty crash in practice that left him peeing blood (this was bad). He then won the heat, which was great! He was running third in the main (good!) before he crashed (bad!). He worked his way back up to sixth (good) but then crashed on last lap in another good one (bad). These are the days of The Bear’s life.

12- Aaron Plessinger, Yamaha YZ250F- Plessinger was sick last week and had a rough night. This week I assume he was better but he had another rough night. First he was cut off by Mookie in the heat and, I think, was rightfully pissed off. Then he somehow pulled a start in the LCQ from the far outside to make the main. But he crashed in the first turn like everyone else and had to come from last.

13- Cedric Soubeyras, Kawasaki KX 250F- Anyone who’s been to Europe SX’s in the off-season knows that Cedric is an entertainer and has some serious supercross skills.

14- Anthony Rodriguez, Kawasaki KX 250F- Traders Kawasaki is a team that’s stepped up this year with Skip Norfolk as crew chief and some good riders. Traders is a restaurant in Maryland so I’m sure the team owner is just doing this for fun and not really trying to get people to fly to Maryland and visit his establishment. However, I could be convinced to write some really good things about this team if a crate of steak and lobsters showed up at my door. Just saying…

15- Joshua Cartwright, Yamaha YZ250F- Cartwright picked up the Blue Buffalo/Slater Skins/Yamaha spot that Benny Bloss walked away from and then the team filled with Andrew Silverstein. After Andrew got hurt, they picked Cartwright, who was a total privateer and up and away they go. I guarantee Josh will be really scared of manager Larry Brooks and his intensity really soon.

16- Justin Starling, Kawasaki KX 250F

17- Jimmy Albertson, Suzuki RMZ 250F- Top Jimmy had a nasty crash in practice and toughed it out to make the main event. After the race he appeared to be hurting pretty good.

18- Shane Mcelrath, KTM 250SX-F Factory Edition- Shane had a for sure top five and probably a podium in his hands when he got away from the carnage with Hill. But he got a flat and had to pull in to get it changed. It’s been a rough start for McElrath, a guy that I predicted we would see big things from. But to be fair to Shane, he came into the series not nearly 100 percent.

19- Logan Karnow, Kawasaki KX 250F- You see on TV how pumped Logan was to make the main? How awesome was that?

20- Daniel Herrlein, Honda CRF 250

21- Cody Church, Kawasaki KX 250F

22- RJ Hampshire, Honda CRF 250- Hampshire got a flat (two flats in SX?) and I’ve always thought that bringing wheels down to the mechanic’s area in SX is a waste of time. You go down a lap getting the new wheel put on and so why bother?

Traders is a great restaurant that should be nice enough to send Matthes some food to try, right?

450SX Results

1- Ken Roczen, Suzuki RMZ 450F- I found Roczen’s team owner Carey Hart tweeting about winning on Saturday and losing on Sunday very odd, what about you guys?

2- Marvin Musquin, KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edit- Marvin is, like, good and stuff. He’s elevated his game to a level that I have to be honest, I didn’t think he’d get to this soon. Great job by him!

3- Ryan Dungey, KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edit- I spoke with Chad Reed on Friday and he said if he was in third and Dungey was on him in fourth and knowing that Dungey was going to break his podium streak record, he would ghost ride his bike into Ryan to prevent the streak from being broken. He was joking I’m sure. At least I think so!

4- Cole Seely, Honda CRF 450- A couple of rough weeks for Seely, who was about the only dude able to make passes in Daytona, stops with this ride in Toronto. He was good all day and I think that’s because this track was technical and required some thinking. Seely’s good at hitting the downsides and having throttle control.

5- Eli Tomac, Kawasaki KX 450F- If you have an answer as to what’s up, call Eli.

6- Justin Brayton, KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition- I was texting with Brayton on Friday and he was stoked to come to Toronto. He’s averaged an 8.8 finish this year but I thought that with his attitude and watching him in practice when he zoomed by Anderson and led the pack around right away that he’d do better than ninth. And that’s exactly what he did.

7- Trey Canard, Honda CRF 450- Trey’s weird year continued with this finish but he qualified fastest and won his heat race so you just know he’s still got “it” y’know? Of course that all went to poop when he got a so-so start and got caught up in the second turn melee. Fourteenth to seventh is fine but this crap has got to be getting SO old for the #41.

8- Weston Peick, Yamaha YZ450F- Nice ride for Weston who hadn’t made the top ten for three straight weeks. He and the team needed this finish. I went in the truck to eat some chicken wings for dinner before the night show (thanks J-Bone!) and saw Weston in there. I asked him “What’s up, buddy?” and he never replied, just glared at me.

9- Jason Anderson, Husqvarna FC450- Anderson blocked me on Instagram for what I’m not sure, so I can’t see his post. But if you’re not blocked, check out the triple/quad he did in Toronto. It was pretty impressive and Nick Schmidt said that he did it on lap 18 or something when he lapped him. Jason was also awesome at hitting the finish and leaning the bike to the left to set himself up for the turn. It was also sweet. As far as the finish, yeah it’s another come-from-way-back-to-a-good finish for Jason, who cartwheeled when he hit a crashed Bogle in the second turn.

10- Jacob Weimer, Suzuki RM-Z450- Weimer had been running a Pulpmx.com sticker for every race but Anaheim 1, but our contract is up. This week we were unable to reach terms to continue our sponsor relationship. Then after the race he wasn’t there to do an interview about this good ride because he said we are now “not affiliated.” This could get ugly.

11- Blake Baggett, Suzuki RM-Z450- Baggett’s been a bit of a cloud out there on the track as in, you don’t really notice him all that much. And that’s ok, he just needs to stay healthy for the outdoors.

12- Vince Friese, Honda CRF 450- I had a factory team manager tell me that Friese is amazing on any segments that have flat turns in them. He’s always up top or close to it in that segment. Who knew Friese was such a good dirt tracker?

13- Mike Alessi, Honda CRF 450

14-Nicholas Wey,Kawasaki KX 450F- Wey’s back! Unable to look at his big bank account, his health, his hot wife and three kids and be happy with that, Wey got a ride with Team Tedder/Monster Energy Kawasaki and is back to the grind. Who says racing’s not a drug?

15- Aj Catanzaro, Kawasaki KX 450F- The Cat is one of those guys that I probably wrote about three years ago saying why bother with 250’s where the purse is ridiculous and you’re not going to get a ride? Make the jump to the 450’s, make some money and get on with your career as a life-long privateer. He’s doing just that and doing pretty well also.

16- Nicholas Schmidt, Suzuki RM-Z450- Schmidt gets to ride the Suzuki track here and there which has to help. If JS7 is out for a while (which I heard he is) and Yosh Suzuki is going to the races anyways with Baggett, why NOT just put Schmidt on the factory bike and see how it goes?

17- Cade Clason, Honda CRF 450- I wonder if Bradshaw and Stanton tear up when they see Clason, the last man running AXO proud here in the USA, make the main?

18- Deven Raper, Kawasaki KX 450F- There’s a few different steps to being a 450 main event guy and Raper is one of those guy that’s probably, not saying for sure because I haven’t spoken to him, thinking he doesn’t have the full 20 laps of all out intensity like he has in the short LCQ’s.

19- Kyle Cunningham, Suzuki RM-Z450- Keep him racing 450’s Jimmy…

20- Thomas Hahn, Yamaha YZ450F

21- Justin Bogle, Honda CRF 450- Bogle grabbed the holeshot and it went downhill very shortly after that. It was a scary crash and Justin’s lucky to have not been hurt worse.

22- Chad Reed, Yamaha YZ450F- I don’t know what exactly happened to Chad off the start but his race was worse than Bogle’s. Weird crash into Canard that left him woozy and sore. I also bet he wasn’t happy about the big whoops being rolled flatter before the night show.

You can pretty much think of anything that can happen in a race and it happened to Bowers or JMart in Toronto. And yet Malcolm Stewart might have had even more drama!

Some more news and notes:

- I was talking to Johnny O’Mara about Jeremy Martin during track walk and he mentioned that out of all the guys he’s worked with, Martin is on the level of Ricky Carmichael as far as being able to handle whatever training load O’Show throws at him. Johnny mentioned that maybe brother Alex’s slow start on the West Coast could be from a bit of over training with Jeremy and Johnny. Not everyone can handle another person’s training habits. See Zach Osborne last summer when he was with Eli Tomac. It’s not a bad thing, Osborne and Alex Martin are gnarly athletes—it’s just that some people are built to handle a bit more.

- At some point Reed and Michael Byrne wandered over and all of us got into a talk about those early four-stroke days and Reed’s switch to the thumper in ’06. We then talked about the issues we had at Yamaha together, O’Show started talking about some of the works bikes he rode in Japan that never saw the light of day. At some point I stopped to think how cool this three way conversation was and how I probably didn’t really belong in it! Johnny told me later that it was awesome to hear those stories from us. That’s right, Johnny O’Mara said it was awesome to hear ME talk!

- Talked to Mookie in the morning and somehow me being Canadian came up with some guys on his team and Mookie had NO idea I was Canadian. Yup, must be a really big fan of all the stuff I do to not know this.

- I was very surprised that Star Yamaha didn’t bring their semi-truck up to this round. It’s a bit of a pain to get across the border with these big rigs but Feld Entertainment makes it a bit easier with the help and hey, other teams made it. This is a team with one of the very best riders in the sport and they couldn’t make it happen? Weird, I’ll say that.

Thanks for reading everyone, much appreciated and I’ll be around at matthes@racerxonline.com if you want to chat about Toronto, Canada, hockey or anything else really including how making a new Indiana Jones movie is a really bad idea.
