DeSoto to be Honored at Vet Championship
San Bernardino, CA – The legendary John DeSoto is the recipient of the Edison Dye Lifetime Motocross Achievement Award and will be added to the Glen Helen Walk of Fame! His induction will take place on Sunday, November 3rd in the new Glen Helen Pavillion building adjacent to the superlative Glen Helen National Track! This induction is traditionally held on day two of the MTA World Veteran Motocross Championships (this year the event is November 2-3). Each year, Tom White and Bud Feldkamp, president of Glen Helen Raceway, choose an outstanding person who had lasting influence on the rise of motocross in America. Among previous Edison Dye Award winners you will find Jeff Ward, Gary Jones, Roger DeCoster, Brad Lackey, David Bailey, Rick Johnson, Bruce Brown and a host of others (see this year’s MTA World Vet Championship Program for a full list of recipients as well as the history of the award).
As part of the award activities, Tom White, the master of ceremonies for the presentation, will interview a panel of dignitaries to entertain the audience with testimonies and stories about John and his storied career. John will receive a super commemorative plaque and be presented with his marble stone that will be added to the Glen Helen Walk of Fame!In addition, Tom traditionally provides a special poster for this event. This year he consigned artist Mark Borzak to crate the John DeSoto poster. Tom has 100 posters printed for the traditional autograph session that follows the award ceremony. The first 100 lucky fans that make it through the autograph line emerge with a highly-collectable poster with not only John’s autograph, but the autographs of other legends of motocross such as Brad Lackey, Rick Johnson, Gary Jones and other great riders of the past!
Mark Borzak, the artist, also has roots in early American motocross. His first pro motocross as a spectator was the 1973 Mid-Ohio Trans AMA race. Mark also raced motocross in his youth!
This year’s MTA World Veteran Motocross Championships promises to be one of the best ever! Dr. D, Doug Dubach, should be back in action in the 40 Pro Class (he is recovering from his Mammoth Mountain crash) and Travis Preston will be returning to vie for the overall win in the 30 Pro Class. Each of these races will feature a $4,000 purse! The 40 Pros will run on Saturday and the 30 Pros will be the featured event on Sunday.
