Broadcast Schedule for the
2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Revealed

NBC to Feature Three Live Motos, with FUEL TV Providing First Moto Coverage

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports, a division of NBC Sports, have announced the broadcast schedule for the 2012 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, set to commence on Saturday, May 19, with the Hangtown Motocross Classic in Sacramento, Calif. Featuring a total of 82 hours of competition from the Nationals, both NBC Sports and FUEL TV will combine to showcase live coverage at all 12 rounds of Lucas Oil Motocross.

“We’re proud to announce that the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has a home with one of the biggest names is sports broadcasting,” said Mark Carter, General Manager of Motocross, Alli Sports. “NBC Sports’ programming will provide the most complete coverage the series has ever seen, with virtually the entire series broadcasts based around the network. Combine that with our continued relationship with FUEL TV and we’re looking forward to the most comprehensive broadcast package that Lucas Oil Motocross has ever had.”

In addition to its coverage of each round of the Nationals NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will present exclusive programming beyond the motos, including a pre-season preview show, mid-season recap, weekly highlight shows following each round, and a post-season recap to close out the 2012 package. NBC will showcase three rounds with live network coverage at the Red Bull Budds Creek National, Red Bull RedBud National, and Red Bull Unadilla National.

FUEL TV became an integral partner of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship last season, as the exclusive broadcast provider of the opening motos at all 12 rounds. For 2012, FUEL TV returns in the same role, bringing live coverage of all first motos to any enthusiasts unable to make it to the Nationals in person. At the Red Bull Budds Creek National on Saturday, June 16, FUEL TV will debut its first live second moto broadcast with the 250 Class. In addition to the FUEL TV broadcasts, first motos will once again be streaming live online at AlliSports.com.

“We’ve worked diligently since 2009 to elevate the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship to new heights, and with this new and improved broadcast schedule, our goals are being met.,” said MX Sports Pro Racing President Davey Coombs. “We appreciate the continued support for Lucas Oil Motocross and the opportunity to grow the series and build even more prestige by having a broadcast home with NBC Sports.”

In the booth, the longtime tandem of veteran announcer Jason Weigandt and three-time AMA Pro Motocross Champion Jeff Emig, will once again team up to bring event play-by-play and analysis to the viewers at home. Weigandt’s vast knowledge of the sport meshes seamlessly with the years of competitive experience Emig possesses to make them one of the most well-rounded broadcast partnerships in all of motorsports. On the track, Georgia Alberston will provide the latest breaking news from the pits and the starting gate, while also interviewing riders before and after they hit the track. NBC Sports’ and BMX veteran Jamie Bestwick returns as well, reporting from the field at select rounds.

Great work DC and everyone at MX sports!! You have taken this sport to never seen before levels....I'd love to see this sport and its coverage grow more and more every year. DC is such an amazing person to listen to everyone, go to websites and listen to people complain about him, his website, his magazine, mx sports, or anything else he touches and he takes that on in and totally runs with it or lets it roll off his back! Congrats DC and everyone at MX Sports!!

I hope "NBC sports group" can do better than CBS's "personality profile" coverage. Racers want to see racing, not "human interest" pieces.

BillC, the real story is going to be the 250F's this summer (and who is stolen from the 250F's to fill in the 450's).

For Kawasaki, Rattray is such a steady performer, I'd be hard pressed to move him up rather than have a genuine contender for a 250F title (though I have to admit, I can't wait to see him on a 450).

OR maybe euromike is right and everybody should just move up & not bother trying 'cause Roczen is going to DOMINATE.......

Normally, I try to keep my hard opinions to myself, but I gotta vent here. Alli, the job of a content owner's TV package is to tell the story in a compelling manner. Sending half the content to one broadcast venue and the other half a number of hours later to another venue is a disservice to the content, participants and the audience.

I realize that there are reasons you chose your course of action, but I must protest that you are, in effect, dividing the baby in half here, making nobody the winner.

The long and short is that I am disapointed, inconvienienced, and disheartened. Please concentrate on developing the content rather than manipulating the audience. It comes across as emphasizing the revenue generation over the actual content you are seeking to monetize.

Stay true to the sport, and applaud the victors as the drama unfolds! That is how to grow the franchise. Don't morgage the sport for short term gain!

@Big ugly maniac;
I'm feeling your ethos here too. If your programming goal was to divide, conquer, confuse, and minimize the appetite of the viewing public, you would be hard pressed to come up with a better plan. It is so frustrating to see the programming gains take place at such a glacial pace. I know I should be happy to have what we have, but the knowledge that some of these broadcasts may be pre-empted by "Breaking Nascar News" or a strongman competition, just makes me sick.
We surf through the channels and see so much crap and time wasting garbage. When will we be loved? and our sport beloved?

Guys, thanks for the feedback. We haven't actually released the international schedule yet, so hopefully that will be better for some of you. And why the divided coverage, BigUgly? Because races last five hours and that's a lot of time for one network -- any network -- to devote their Saturdays to all summer long. Football games last three hours, basketball games two hours (never made it to the end of a NASCAR race so I have no idea there) and they don't have two classes running. If we did one moto per class, it would all be on one network, but people would complain about that too.

And George248, if really you think TV was better 10 or 15 years ago, I really can't help you here.

I have to start looking deeper into my cable offerings, but I think Canada is Screwed! However I think the US is Screwed too!

I hope Feld Motorsports was happy with their Supercross on CBS Sports Spectacular TV coverage, because I certainly wasn't. The CBS TV coverage was a dumbed down product, targeted at casual or non-moto fans who only watch for the crashes. They're just hopping on the 'extreme' sports bandwagon. And the picture quality on my HD broadcast was horrid. They must throttle down the bandwidth, because they think us Moto people aren't worthy of a full stream of data. The SpeedTV HD broadcast of the Lites was brilliant as usual.

I fear that NBC will do the same, showing MX as an 'extreme' or 'lifestyle' thrill activity, rather than the world's toughest SPORT that it is.

I know it's all about the numbers, but I have a hard time believing that an irregular schedule split among 3 networks will bring more viewers than what Speed brought to the advertisers last year. But Alli/MX Sports/NBC owns the show and can do what they want. Even if its wrong.

BTW 'carlsbad' - I think Moto fans do care about rider interviews and the personalities (RV2 notwithstanding) in the sport. But add an extra 1/2 hour for the pre-race show, don't take away race coverage to do it.

Profile Picture
Singletrack wrote: 11:15am May 4, 2012

Davey, it's nice to see your comments - right from the horses mouth, as it were ;)
I hope your experience and integrity will ensure the show is done right.

I understand that all 5 hours won't be broadcast live. But we can dream, can't we? If that's not going to happen, I think the perfect format would be 3 hours (1.5 hr 250/1.5 hr 450), same day delayed coverage. Show both motos in (edited) entirety, plus some pre/post race features. Moto fans are out riding during the day. I love coming home and watching in the evening!

Bring back Art Eckman, He was the man and still is the man. He is down in the Atlanta area. He just didn't want to do the whole week grind now that it is a wrap on Saturday, no problem. So yes TV was better in that sense, even Larry Maiers and the motoworld show. Get a rider or someone connected to the sport that can talk. Emig is a great example of what you can overcome. Hell I think I might get in the mix,{ Bar TO Bar } Cameron Steele } come on.Your talking about a guy yes who has competed in Baja but running of the bulls and skate boards big deal.. Bring back David Bailey or the likes of Mc somebody that will go for the W

Les, I am not trying to spin anything (and the correct spelling is "fallacy") . 65 Cobra, NBC Sports used to be Versus and is now owned by NBC, which owns Alli Sports, our commercial partner in the series, and yes, it's HD. As for Fuel, Speed never aired the first motos, so this has been a great addition, in my opinion.

@ Davey Coombs, some NASCAR races in recent years have lasted up to 5 hours (red flags stoppage) or two days. (Daytona 2012) Maybe a small intermission show in between the first and second motos, while the track is being worked on. That could catch some accidental viewers and maybe help grow the audience.

BigUglyManiac wrote: 6:36pm May 4, 2012

DC,

While we may differ in opinions and clearly you see much more of the picture that I will ever see, I totally honor your efforts to get in the middle and improve things as best you can. You have all the respect I can generate and more power to you as you shape our beloved sport.

I understand that 5 hours is a big committment and while I absolutely love live performances, I realize that outdoor motocross cannot generate the advertizing revenue for that slot.

I do think that a cohesive two moto program does tell the story better than 1/2 the story live on channel X and the other half on channel Y, even if you take the time to keep the announcing team consistent (which is very creative, I might add).

As an alternate, can you post the complete footage on RacerX on Mondays so people can plan epic motocross parties like we did for the live supercross parties? Monday night Motocross baby! this would pander well to us hardcore usetobees/wannabees who love to see the kids mix it up, and would provide an additional advertisement revenue stream for the content, specifically the enthusiast demographic.

As it stands, my crew can't justify begging off the lawn maintenance and honedos for a simple one hour, one moto program in the man cave with the guys - the wives don't buy it, especially when we have to run two parties every weekend to get our full moto on. Feel my pain!

Warrior - Thanks! I didn't see that at all I just wanted to see the T.V schedule and didn't even read that. But I still don't have the second motos covered, but still can't wait for the Outdoors, two weeks!

DC, I'm eagerly anticipating the international schedule. I hope someone like Rogers Sportsnet One picks up the FUEL or NBCSN coverage in Canada, otherwise I'm staring at the regular NBC network showings and YouTube as my outdoor fix.
