Sunday Qualifier Results from Valkenswaard
Monday, April 9, 2012 | 9:20 AM
The heavy title favorites for the 2012 Monster Energy FIM World Championships, defending MX1 champion Tony Cairoli and MX2 pilot Jeffrey Herlings, led the way in Sunday qualifying for tomorrow's opening round of the series in Valkenswaard, Holland. KTM-mounted Cairoli topped French Yamaha rider Steven Frossard and Belgian Suzuki rider Clement Desalle on the rough sand track, which will host the actual Grand Prix tomorrow -- a rare Monday race due to today's Easter holiday.
In the MX2 class the local superstar Herlings was nearly three seconds faster than runner-up Jeremy Van Horebeek and third-place Tommy Searle on their fastest laps of the race, winning by 25 seconds in front of the partisan fans.

The lower-tier world championships begin today. The FIM calls it MX1. The real world championship is right here in the good ol' USA.
I like the way the race info is laid out. It is better than the AMA live timing. Looked like all of the classes lapped up to or close to 11th place.
@ endoman if you dont have anyting good to say sometimes it is better not to say it. The top guys are pretty fast and the tracks are much different.
What happened to the CP377 in 32nd place thought he'd be a top five guy.
gotta love the 40+ minute laps.
Just telling it like it is. So many of their top riders can't wait to come to the US, that it waters down their depth.
Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS) on a factory Honda is listed as the slowest in the qualifier at 2:03.84...yet he prequalifying time was 1:49.39 ( a faster time than Herlings when he won the qualifier ). He won Germany last season and was supposed to be a top five finisher. Does anyone know what happened to him?
hey endoman...obviously you know little about FIM World Championship motocross. In Europe the pros run 40 min + motos in all natural conditions...not the 20 minute sprint races that the US riders do. Even our pros only do 30 minute motos due to "fan boredom"...but 40 minutes + two laps is where our sport was born and thrived before promoters put the kibbosh on showcasing speed, skill, AND endurance. Go to Europe and try to be competitive for two 40 minute + motos before you criticize.
I too, like the longer moto's, as that is what I grew up with...I think the time concession was to get the sport on tv..seems there is always a trade off..I like seeing the sport on the telly, so I will accept the shorter moto's... The euros style is differant, it is still impressive!!!
@endoman
How can "real" world championship be the USA? The FIM championship goes all over the world. The AMA is only a national series.
Just wait for the des nations in Lommel, belgium this year.
that will shut some mouths. there´s nobody in the world who can run with herlings on a track like that. not even RV.
I agree no one can run with herlings in the sand.
If you don't like it, just avoid it, old man
That's a pretty big comment that a guy on a 250 will beat RV on an outdoor track. I can't see that happening.
Who says that herlings is going to ride a 250?
And by the way. In the pre season race in mantova herlings won a race against all the 450´s. that track is sandy but not as deep as Valkenswaard or Lommel. anyway I can´t wait to see that race and if RV wins fine, if not fine too.
