Bench Racers Christmas: Forty years of AMA Motocross Records
Friday, December 23, 2011 | 1:25 PMRacer X Illustrated is proud to offer a glimpse at the beta release of our new Racer X Vault, which is an exhaustive archive that will feature records, results and final standings going back as far as recorded history allows. With the help of moto historians Larry Lawrence and MX Sports Pro Racing's Nick McCabe, we have compiled all of the top-twenty finishers in every AMA Motocross National since the series began back on April 16, 1972, right outside of Atlanta, Georgia, up through the final motos of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
“Bench racers and students of the sport can use this search engine to find out about the history of AMA Motocross, going back to the days of Gary Jones, Barry Higgins, Gunnar Lindstrom, Brad Lackey and more,” said Davey Coombs, the founder of Racer X Illustrated and Racer X Online. “It's still a work-in-progress, and we are soon to add the complete results from Monster Energy Supercross, which also goes back to the early seventies, plus Team USA's history at the Motocross and Trophee des Nations, as well as results and standings from nearly-forgotten series like the Trans-AMA and Inter-Am tours.”
The Racer X Vault archive not only includes top-twenty results and point standings from the 125, 250 and 500 Nationals, but it also includes a brief history of each season, which we began compiling for last year's 40-Day Countdown to the 40th Year of AMA Pro Motocross.
“Again, it's a work in progress, and we still have some kinks to sort out,” added Coombs. “But soon you will see galleries of all of the past champions, a video gallery of highlights of races run long ago, and even a program cover collection. It should be a lot of fun for folks who like to look back at the history of our sport.”

Merry Christmas to everyone from Racer X Illustrated.

An incredibly valuable and entertaining resource for motocross fans. Thanks for doing it!
Awesome! I think its so important to preserve the history of our sport, and I couldn't imagine a better way of doing it. Thank you Racer X, this has got to be one of the best Christmas gifts ever. lol
Nice!!! Hopefully there will also be a SX vault...
Wow - very cool. Thanks very much for spending the time to pull this info together. I started following the sport in the late 60s it will be fun going back to see all the stuff I followed as a kid. I remember going to the barbershop every week to check out the new Cycle News each week for results.
DC - Any chance you could do locate the results for the AMA Amateur Nationals for the pre-Loretta's years? It would be cool to see who actually made it to the pros from that era, especially since it was only expert/A riders that raced the Amateur Nationals back then.
Any chance you are working on a list of National numbers by year too??
CR500, both are in the works, and if you need anything in the meantime, just shoot me at email and I will try to research it: [email protected]

Very nice, Davey. Going to be lost in this for days on end!
DC thank you for this awesome resource. I have been following since '76 or so and love looking back and refreshing the memory. There are some very interesting names beyond the established stars through the different eras. Good stuff!

Love it, Was just looking at Metcalfe. Forgot he got held on a 125 against the 250f's a little long

Weeee Dogogies I have not even opened the link and I am exited about it!!
Thanks Davey-- from the poster giy!
@ CR500 I also started in the late 60s Have quite a few momento's. Most of which are covered by scars......
@Welker - I have my share of scars too, including a big skin graft on my right thigh from an '81YZ250. I was helping a friend set up his suspension to get ready for the 250 support class at the '81 125 USGP and hit a big square edged hole I wasn't ready for. Last thing I remember I was floating above the bike thinking how much it was going to hurt when I hit...
This unique "work-in-progress" is not only a blast to comb through and such, but it's an incredible reminder of the countless number of "also-ran" racers and their dedication to our sport. Barry Carsten from Bayville, NJ...your directly across the Barnegat Bay #1 Fan nominates YOU for the " It's Motocross Victory...Or I'm Gonna Die Trying Award!" You're career in our sport is commendable.Although we know you were "out there" like few privateers could, this new extension to the best online MX/SX site brings it to light! Great job DC! You've as much perseverance to this project as the scores of competitors noted within!
Core enthusiasts looking at this for the first time best set aside extended easy chair time. "I'm just gonna get quick glimpse" will make you late for the holiday festivities you might have planned!

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season to all!
I think you need a correction on the year that Gaylon Mosier died. On the 1980 page, it says Gaylon died in 1979. I'm pretty sure it was Sept. 1980, as I was staying with the Keystone Crew for the whole of the Trans[-USA series and was in N.Y. when he was killed.
"An incredibly valuable and entertaining resource for motocross fans." Are you kidding? This frickin' sucks. Do you know how much time I'm going to waste there?
