Your Collection: 1980 Suzuki RM125

Sunday, November 20, 2011 | 11:05 AM

This weeks collection comes to us from Zachary Burt in Salisbury, Maryland.

"Hello RacerX, I thought many of you vintage fans out there would like to see this piece of history.
It is a 1980 Suzuki rm 125, the last year of the air-cooled 125's and the last year of the twin shock by Suzuki. I bought it in Delaware for $200 in January of 2010 it had been sitting outside for 3 years, was missing the side covers and the owner couldn't get it started. The first day i went to my local powersports dealer bought a new spark plug, mixed up some gas and tried to fire her over, on the 3rd kick she fired right up. Luckily I was smarter than the guy I bought it from and actually put gas in it. Here are some pictures of it after a full restoration. Enjoy!"

Sweet!- I had a 78' model and loved it. Those twin shocks worked pretty good. Nice truck in the background too- looks like a marlin.

Good Job! I really like the old Suzuki's as I started out on a 1970 TC90 then a couple years later a 73 TS125. Tough bikes as I had removed the lights and tried to emulate my heros Decoster and Robert. A 74 TM125 was my first true mx machine and I continued to ride yellow with a 76 RM125 A, 78 a RM250 C2. Then a 80 RM400 that we had to cut the pipe in half next to the back pressure washer, cut 4mm out of the center of the washer and weld the pipe back up which made it run great! Used a Tera Flex rear tire to get it to hook up. In I had both the RM 125 Full Floater and the RM465. After several other mxers I went back to Suzuki with a 01 RM250 and now I have a 08 RMZ250 which I race in the Over 50 class.

Memories... in the corner of my mind.

My 1st dirtbike and compared to the dual-sport TS 250 I was riding at the time, a rocket.

Very nice bike Zach. My friend is actually looking for one of these to race in the Post Vintage class. He has a pristine 1975 TM 250 he is willing to trade even for one of these 125's so he can race in the same class as his friend. If you are interested in trading or if you know where another 1978 - 1980 RM 125 can be located please post back.

@BD25, I too was yellow, until, the RM250C2, Qustion to you, did your 250 C2 treat you bad? Mine broke in 1/2, blew the both shocks, Broken rear hub, pipe came apart, all on bagging groceries at 15 yrs old, was yours simler? The Honda woulda been the smart choice in hindsite. (2 weeks after I bought it)

I did drill the motor mounts out, and put bolts that fit, in, before riding it too. ( Old RM's, motor mounts were sloppy from the factory.) tough yr.

No Joe, 78 RM250 C2 was a good bike for me. I raced it in nov class while a friend raced it in the ex untill he got his 78 CR250. The CR was a faster bike, but the RM turned better. I really liked my 82 RM125 the best, it did every thing well, just had to keep up on clutch plates.
