Star Racing Supercross Round 12 Race Report
Toronto, Canada - The AMA Supercross Series traveled north of the border, making an appearance in Canada by way of a huge fan base inside the Rogers Centre over the past weekend. A technical track, with extremely rocky soil treated DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha’s #25 Ryan Sipes, and #533 Gannon Audette, to a tough night of racing but both riders made good on the night. Sipes once again posted the 1st quickest timed qualifying lap, he was so fast his time actually slated 3rd in the premier class behind Stewart and Canard, while Audette logged in at the 7th spot.
Lites Heat #2 began in solid form with Audette and Sipes upfront and setting the standard through turn one. Unfortunately for Sipes, as he exited the first switchback in 4th, his front tire was taken out leaving him on the ground nearly last in the field. For six laps, Audette kept his composure as he went after the leader. Holding strong, the Yamaha pilot fended off any attacks and raced on to a 2nd place. Sipes showed unbelievable promise with a wicked pace, seeing him make a move for a decent qualifying spot, and by races end he finished in 5th.
For the main event, track conditions had deteriorated which made racing all the more difficult. Sipes got out to a third place start and passed for the lead, taking two riders at once. But yet again, his luck was tested at end of lap one when the second place rider forced an aggressive pass which sent #25 crashing off the track and practically a lap down. Finishing lap one in 8th, Audette avoided all the carnage and set out towards the front. After a few more laps into the race, Gannon had etched his way up in to 6th, and held there solidly through lap ten. At this point, Sipes rode at an unmatched pace, and with the race past the halfway mark he comfortably ran just inside the top ten. With the 15 laps winding down, the DNA teammates rode onward in trying to salvage a good result. In the end, Sipes put together a comeback in the closing laps that turned heads as he rallied to a 5th place finish, and Audette took home a career best 7th for the night.
