Rockstar Suzuki Race Report: Toronto
March 16, 2010 6:26pm
Toronto, Canada – Toronto marked the halfway point for the Eastern Regional Lites Championship, and riders Blake Baggett and Jake Moss came into the event hopeful that the momentum they have been generating over the past few weeks would carry them to the top of the podium. As the night progressed, however, the combination of the rough track and intense competition caused numerous problems for the team.
The dirt at Rogers Centre was “tacky and a little muddy during the track walk,” according to Lites rider Blake Baggett. “After the first few practice sessions the dirt started to dry out, and then the rocks started to come up.” Those rocks would prove to be troublesome for the young rider, who took a dive on lap three of the Lites main event that did some damage to both bike and rider. Blake rode his RM-Z250 to the mechanics area to get it checked out, and while the skilled Suzuki techs did everything they could to repair the damaged left radiator, they could do nothing for Blake’s soreness after the crash. Despite the pain he felt, Blake continued to ride and took 19th overall. Blake will be seeing a chiropractor about his injuries this week, and is expected to be back to 100 percent for the next race in Arlington, Texas. “I’m really hoping to continue that momentum we built up in Daytona,” said Blake.
Jake Moss also had some difficulty Saturday night, battling both the rocky track and the other riders. He started off strong and ranked fifth after timed practice, his best so far this season, but a crash during his heat race sent him to the LCQ. Moss faced some tough competition there, but in the end he managed to make the pass for second and came away with the final transfer spot for the main.
The last gate pick gave Moss a poor starting position in the Lites main event, but he fought hard to make the best of it. He raced his way as high as twelfth place before some trouble in the whoops took him down and put him near the back of the pack. Moss finished 18th overall, just ahead of his teammate Blake. “The results may not show it, but it was actually a good night for me,” said Moss. “I was riding better than I have been, so I was happy about that.” Team manager Bill Keefe agreed, saying, “Jake definitely showed some of his old speed in Toronto.” Both Jake and Bill are hoping to see some better finishes this weekend.
Supercross class rider Tommy Hahn seemed to have better luck in Toronto than his teammates had. Hahn took fifth in his heat race, which gave him a solid gate pick for the main, but he got boxed out on the first turn, which forced him to battle through the pack in the main event. Even with this unfortunate turn of events, Tommy still managed to work his way to an eighth-place finish. His hard work on Saturday also earned him enough points to put him back in the top ten in the season point standings. Tommy is looking forward to racing in his home state of Texas at the upcoming Arlington round.
The 11th round of the AMA/FIM Supercoss Series will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on March 20th.
