Moto XXX Stands Out in the First Four Nationals
With the glitz and glamour of Supercross now a distant memory, the
world’s best motocross riders have gotten back to their roots—high
temperatures, long motos and the roughest, toughest tracks in the
world. The AMA Motocross Nationals are in full swing and with four
rounds in the books, no other team has made a statement quite as strong
as the Unbound Energy/Moto XXX squad.
Due to injuries and a customary run of bad luck, the team was never
fully represented in the first two rounds of the series. Even so, Josh
Summey gave everyone a lot to cheer about with a couple of top-ten
overall finishes. Once the entire 4-man crew was assembled, however,
things took an even better turn.
Round 3 was held at the world famous MX 338 track in Southwick, Mass.
Its incredibly tough, sandy layout proved to be right up the XXX
riders’ collective alley. Making his ’06 outdoor debut, Timmy Ferry led
the way with a 7th place finish overall. Not far back was Kyle Lewis,
who finished twelfth in both motos and overall. Juss Laansoo was 13th,
while Josh Summey ended the day in 15th. The first time that the team
was at full-strength, all four riders placed in the top twenty overall.
That’s a feat that no other team, factory or privateer, has
accomplished yet this year.
Next on the schedule was Budds Creek, the site of next year’s Motocross
des Nations, and the boys kicked it up another notch. Ferry led the way
once again, this time finishing 6th overall by way of 8-6 moto
finishes. Summey made his way back into the top ten, finishing 8th with
a 9-9 showing. That made him three-for-four in top-ten finishes this
season. Not to be left out, Juss Laansoo overcame a disastrous first
moto with an 11th place ride in the day’s final race, which earned him
17th on the day.
The series points standings are looking equally good for Moto XXX right
now. After four rounds, Josh Summey has a firm grip on 9th in the
series. In just two outings, Timmy Ferry has moved all the way up to
13th. Kyle Lewis sits in 16th, right ahead of Juss Laansoo in 17th.
With four riders in the top twenty, Team Unbound Energy/Moto XXX is
clearly setting the standard. Of all the other teams in the pits, only
one has two riders in the top twenty and they’re a factory squad.
The next stop for Moto XXX is the famous Red Bud National on 4th of
July weekend. As the enthusiastic Red Bud faithful celebrate America’s
birthday, they’ll also be able to wish the nation’s most successful
privateer team a happy 10th anniversary.
