A week after a crash at the Hangtown Motocross Classic, we have an update on Trevor Colip. In qualifying for round two of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, a rider crashed right in front of Colip at the top of a hill. There was no time to react or see it, and Trevor and others clipped the downed bike. Colip crashed badly, which resulted with a broken femur. He was taken to the hospital, where he experienced "further complications," as explained by his family on his Instagram account. He remains in the ICU at the moment.
The first update, which came on Saturday, read:
“During the second 250 Group A qualifying session at Hangtown Classic on 5/31/25, at the second round of the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship Series, Trevor Colip was involved in a serious accident. Trevor was evaluated by the medical team at the track and then transported to a local hospital emergency room. The accident resulted in a broken femur, and further complications were experienced during treatment at the hospital, where he remains in the ICU as of this statement.
Please continue to PRAY and send notes of encouragement to Trevor and his family here and through @tilubehondaracing”
The second update came Sunday, June 8:
“Update 6/8:
Trevor was alert and responsive, and fully cognitive upon entering the hospital. After being put into traction Trevor became unresponsive. Upon later evaluation, it was determined that Trevor had “many, many strokes” resulting in brain damage visible via MRI. It was discovered that Trevor has a small hole between the upper right and left chambers of the heart. The activity to put the femur into traction released bone marrow containing fat emboli into his blood stream, and the hole in the heart allowed the fat emboli to travel to his brain, causing the strokes. Following this, Trevor had a surgery to temporarily stabilize his femur with an external fixator last Sunday. He will be undergoing 2 surgeries early this week, one to repair the PFO in his heart to mitigate further damage to his brain in advance of femur surgery and one to repair the femur. The damage to his brain has not been fully determined at this time and the recovery process is yet to be determined.
As of this update Trevor is alert and communicating. We are focusing on the small wins; he still has a long way to go. We are limiting his contact with people outside of our immediate family to allow him the rest he needs to focus on recovery. We greatly appreciate everyone that has reached out to us / him to show support and pray. Prayers are being answered daily. -Rachel”
Update: June 18
Trevor Colip’s family has provided another update. Check it out below.
“Update 6/17:
Now day 18 in the hospital in CA.
@trevorcolip had surgery to remove the external fixator and repair his femur with a plate and screws on Saturday 6/14. This option was chosen over the traditional rod to lessen the risk of fat emboli releasing from the bone marrow and traveling to his brain. Trevor has been alert and responsive since surgery, but sleeping as much as he can to manage pain, as this surgery was quite invasive. He has been undergoing neurological evaluations every 4 hours to watch for additional strokes after this latest surgery. He’ll need to remain in the hospital for monitoring for a few more days still at minimum. His full current neurological state is uncertain but there are good signs that he is recovering and communicating. There are a lot of contributors in play, such as meds, that make it really hard to fully evaluate at this time.
Trevor has started bedside PT/OT here in CA and in-patient Neurological recovery / therapy options are being explored across the country.
Timing for release from hospital and timing for next steps is uncertain, which also makes travel plans uncertain at this time…including challenges associated with travel via commercial flights or ground transportation due to the distances involved and related risks. The situation remains day by day.
We have been in communication with @road2recovery since early after the accident and anticipate more info here soon.
Thank you for your continued prayers and support, and for your patience as we work through updates as best we can.
-Rachel”
