Dragon Racing Fuels/1-866-KTM-PART Houston Race Report
February 14, 2011 2:25pm
Houston, Texas – The Dragon Racing Fuels/1-866-KTM-PART team headed into Houston for the first round of the 2011 East Coast Lites series armed with the new Fury blend of Dragon Racing Fuel and great expectations for their rookie riders, #60 Killy Rusk and #690 Ricky Winters.
Qualifying went well for Killy and he ended up with the 19th fastest qualifying time giving him a good gate pick for the second heat race of the evening.
As the gate dropped on the second heat race, Killy got a good jump but gave up his line and came around the first turn towards the back of the pack. Riding hard towards the front, the rookie’s nerves got the best of him and the mistakes proved to be too much for the young rider to overcome. He was going to have to try and make the main through the LCQ.
Ready for the LCQ, Killy had the last gate pick and was lined up in the last gate on the outside. When the gate dropped, Killy got out front heading into the first turn when he and another rider banged bars and Killy was forced off the track and into the tough blocks. As he was trying to re-enter the track, a tough block cover got caught in his rear sprocket and Killy’s night was over. This night, the team would be watching the Main event as spectators.
“With this being our first race with the new bikes, I was very pleased”… stated Al Albiker, Team Manager. “The bikes suspension worked perfectly and the performance of the motors were proven to be on par with the top teams. The new Fury blend from Dragon Racing Fuel made the bikes crisp and very quick. This was the closest qualifying field back through the top 20. Normally, 5 or 6 guys are fast. The top 20, from 1st to 20th was 2 seconds or less”; added Albiker. “Our riders needed some race experience which they got and we will work hard before Atlanta. Mike Willard will be joining us in Atlanta and our guys will be ready to step up there”.
With the first East Coast race in the books and some race experience under the young rider’s belts, the team will head to Atlanta with a new game plan and another rider in the stable. Veteran Lites rider #68 Michael Willard will join the team and race the remaining 2011 East Coast Supercross Lites rounds before heading back to Canada to contest for the championship on the Canadian KTM Factory team.
