TiLube Racing Puts in an Impressive Effort at Phoenix

  • TiLube Racing Puts in an Impressive Effort at Phoenix
Advance, NC - TiLUBE Racing's team had some challenges at the Monster Energy Phoenix Supercross race. Matt Boni (#50) was injured in his heat race when he was struck by a rock above his eye and then taken out by another rider later in the same race. Manuel Rivas (#921) struggled with finding his race-pace at the Phoenix track and had his share of crashes keeping him out of the main event.

In the qualifying session Boni's best lap time was 52.322 seconds putting him in 24th position. Rivas was a little slower posting a best lap time of 52.742 seconds putting him in 31st place.

In the first 450 heat race in front of a packed house at Chase Field, TiLUBE Racing's Matt Boni got a good start and was advancing positions, which should have earned him a spot in the main event. However, early in the race he somehow got hit above the eye with a rock and it cut him wide open. Although he continued to ride with the cut bleeding, he was taken out by another rider just before the finish leaving him in 19th place. After his heat race Boni headed straight for the Asterisk Medical Unit for stitches.

In the second heat Rivas started mid pack and outside of qualifying position. He rode a solid race but couldn't find the speed to make enough passes to get him in the main. He finished the heat race in 13th place.

After getting fourteen stitches above his eye, it was questionable if Boni would race the LCQ. When he first opened his eye he said, "We came here to race, let's do this!" Both Boni and Rivas spun on the start and did not get off the line in a good position. Boni did make several passes and ended up 4th. Rivas went down early in the race and finished in 18th place. Neither rider made it to the main event.

"This was a tough race for the TiLUBE Racing team but I was impressed with the commitment our riders demonstrated in Phoenix. These guys are 150% committed and that is all you can ask of your riders. They put in a great effort and the results will come. The competition this season in Supercross is fierce, I mean there were factory riders who didn't even make the main event in Phoenix," commented team manager Tony Wenck.

After two rounds of the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross Series it is Matt Boni in 23rd place overall in the standings.

The TiLUBE Racing team's next event is Saturday, January 22nd, at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
