Spy Optic’s Kevin Windham’s Back in Action

CARLSBAD, Calif. – Spy Optic’s Kevin “K-Dub” Windham (GEICO Powersports/Honda) made a triumphant return to competitive motocross racing this past weekend, placing 3rd and winning a bronze medal in the X Games’ Super X event – a prelude to Windham’s return to the Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals next weekend at Unadilla in New Berlin, N.Y.
“Felt good to get back on a bike,” said Windham. “That Step Up event was a blast. And the whole X Games scene in general is a lot of fun. Look forward to getting back to the Nationals, though. See if we can’t shake things up a bit.”
Windham’s return to Unadilla will certainly bring back memories from the 2003 season when he returned after a year off and ruined Ricky Carmichael’s undefeated season with an overall win at the ‘Dilla. A standout on the throwback MXGP tracks – America’s longest-running MX race – Windham will no doubt challenge the top guys right out of the gate, including supercross rival Chad Reed.
Also racing well at the X Games was Spy Optic’s Nick Wey (Boost/ampm/Monster/Troy-JLaw Racing). The top ten-ranked MX Nationals’ premier 450 class racer, Wey scored a 5th place overall finish in the Super X, transferring to the main with an exciting win in the LCQ. And joining Windham and Wey at Unadilla – certain to draw some attention given it’s his hometown race – is Jason “JLaw” Lawrence (Boost/ampm/Monster/Troy-JLaw Racing) who hails from nearby New Jersey.
North of the border this past weekend, at the Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, Monster Energy CMRC Canadian MX Nationals, Spy Optic’s Paul Carpenter nailed an overall two-moto podium finish (3rd) in the MX1 class to keep himself in the running for an overall season podium. Paul Carpenter’s currently in 3rd place overall in the MX1 class. His Spy Optic teammate, Bob Kiniry, raced to his first moto podium of the season (3rd) in the opening contest, but suffered a DNF in the second moto and placed 12th overall. Jack Carpenter then picked it up, racing to a season-best 5th place overall finish at Moncton.
Next up for Spy Optic’s motocross racers contesting the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals is round nine of the series at Unadilla (New Berlin, N.Y.), Aug. 15th, while the Monster/Cernic’s/Kawasaki team will be at Sand Del Lee MX Park in Ottawa, Canada, this weekend.
