Bobby Bonds put in another come-from-behind performance to win the sixth round of the World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS) by passing Mike Brown for the lead on the very last lap of the two-hour Pro Main event. Having just won round five, it was Bonds second win of the season and the victory put him just one point behind rival Brown in the Championship points.
Brown got the holeshot and started to pull away from the all-star field, but he crashed before the first lap was done and dropped to fourth. Kyle Summers took over the lead and began to push hard to establish himself, but Brown, Tim Weigand, Kevin Rookstool, and Justin Soule were hard on his rear fender. Meanwhile, Bonds was buried back in the pack with Ricky Dietrich, and GNCC-star Josh Strang.
Pit stops, crashes, and stalls saw several riders take over the lead, with the main man being Brown out front. Bonds looked scattered for most of the first hour, but constantly moved up. Then, just as the second hour began Bonds seemed to wake up and really started to charge. “I was having trouble getting used to the new bike,” said Bobby (Bonds was riding a 450 Yamaha instead of his usual 450 Honda). “I kept crashing and then I guess I figured it out and got going.”
Bonds charge took him into the lead pack with Taylor Robert and Strang in tow. In the last 20 minutes Brown, Robert, and Summers all made a bid for the lead. Going into the final lap, it looked as though Brown had it wrapped up with Bonds charging, but well behind in second, but with just a few turns to go Brown went over the bars. “I kept stalling today and then the back of my front fender broke down and locked into my front tire,” said Brown. “Bonds rode a great race, but I wanted to win this one.”
They finished with Bonds taking the win by just seconds, Brown close on his heels in second and Roberts bumping his rear tire across the line for third. Strang fought his way all the way up to fourth with Summers taking fifth.
Dietrich, who has won three of the six WORCS mains so far this season, crashed hard and “rung his bell,” as in hit his head hard enough to slow him considerably. Ricky soldiered on to seventh just behind Weigand in sixth.
Brown still holds the points lead with 129/1 win over Bonds with 128/2 wins and Dietrich with 117/3 wins. The WORCS event was combined with the AMA Western Hare Scrambles Series where Weigand continues to hold the points lead after three events with 66/1 win over Summers with 62, and Brenden Ritzman with 49/1 win.
