Toyota AMA Arenacross Series Races into Baltimore
Defending champ Chad Johnson gets his first win of season in Charlotte; sets sights on series leader Danny Smith
AURORA, Ill., (Jan. 10, 2007) – The Toyota AMA Arenacross Series points chase tightened up a few notches this past weekend when defending champion Chad Johnson earned his first win of the season in Charlotte, while last year’s series runner-up to Johnson, Brock Sellards, swept the Grand Rapids (Mich.) round and moved up from ninth to fourth in the overall AMA Arenacross class. This weekend the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series rolls into Baltimore’s (Md.) 1st Mariner Arena for Round Six of the 16-round national series.
“Things are really starting to get interesting, and I think the race this week in Baltimore is going to be a make-or-break event for some of the racers,” said Robert Hansen, director of arenacross for Live Nation. “Chad (Johnson) really needed a win – and got it at Charlotte. Danny Smith’s still got a solid points lead, but watch out for Kevin Johnson this weekend. He swept both nights last year.”
As it stands, Smith has a 29-point lead over Chad Johnson (165-136), with Kevin Johnson in third overall (133 points). Sellards did the most for his cause last weekend by sweeping two close races in Grand Rapids over Teddy Maier and Matt Barnes.
Also with something to prove this weekend is Robbie Reynard. Due to some tough luck at Charlotte, Reynard dropped back into fifth place overall, and he’ll be looking to redeem himself in the win column at Baltimore. Reynard trails Sellards by only one point, 122-121 for fourth overall in the AMA Arenacross class standings.
In the AMA Lites division Carolina Xpress’ Jim Neese is the favorite this weekend in Baltimore. Last weekend in Charlotte Neese swept both Friday and Saturday’s Lites class races and leads the Eastern Lites regional No. 1 plate title chase.
