My First Bike: Tom Carson
Do you remember when you got your first bike? For most of us, it’s one of the best days of our lives. Thanks to the support of our friends at Spy Optics, we’ve decided to start a new Saturday column called “My First Bike.” The subject of this week’s column is Asterisk's Tom Carson, who has fond memories of his first bike, which sparked his passion for racing motorcycles.
This is me in 1970 sitting on my used, 1969, Honda Mini Trail 50 that my Dad purchased for me at the Honda Corral in Wintersville, Ohio. I loved this bike and I rode it everywhere all the time. In the winter, I even bought pieces of dog chain to put through the holes in the rims so I had better traction for hill climbing in the snow. My Dad got tired of welding the frame from all of the jumping, so we traded it in on a new red Honda Mini Trail 50. I never got to race either of these bikes, though. My first race was in 1974 in Kilgore, Ohio riding a 1973 Honda XR75. I got third and a busted lip! Notice my big riding goggles. They are Marquette welding goggles from our family store, Carson Auto Parts.
