  • Toyota AMA Arenacross Series Heads Out West To Reno For “Arenocross!”

Reno Livestock Events Center celebrates 15 years of Toyota AMA Arenacross at this weekend’s race

AURORA, Ill., (Nov. 13, 2006)  – Motocross fans on the west coast are in for a treat this weekend when the all the stars of the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series rolls into Reno, Nev., for the third weekend of the 2006-’07 Toyota AMA Arenacross Series.

Celebrating its 15th year of competition, the Reno race has traditionally been a regional race at Reno’s Livestock Events Center. This year, however, all of the top names on the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series tour will stage an epic battle in front of what’s expected to be a packed house at the Livestock Events Center.

“There’s always a buzz surrounding arenacross coming to town in Reno, but this year it’s even more so because we’re bringing the top nationally ranked racers to compete with the local hot shots,” said Robert Hansen, director of arenacross for Live Nation. “Historically, this event has drawn racers from all over the West Coast, including southern, central and northern California, along with racers from the Pacific Northwest and the top locals from Nevada. So the added national competition, combined with the guys coming over from the Eastern and Midwest states, is going to make for one heck of a weekend of racing in Reno!”

On top of the standings in the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series is Team TUF Racing’s Danny Smith. The winner of the opening night’s AMA Arenacross class race in Des Moines (Iowa), Smith has tallied 76 points after four races (two in Des Moines, two in Albany, N.Y.). But right on his heels – and coming awfully fast – is Oklahoma’s Robbie Reynard. With a win on the opening night in Albany this past weekend and a 5th place finish on Sunday, Reynard – who failed to even qualify for the race Smith won – has pulled within 10 points of Smith, 76-66.

“Things are going well, and I am starting to find my rhythm,” said Reynard. “Riders are a lot more aggressive now then when I won the arenacross title back in 1992-’93. There are a lot more top riders, which makes for a great show for the fans.”

Up close to Smith and Reynard are the Johnsons  – defending champ Chad (Junior Jackson Racing) and Team Faith’s Kevin, along with the consistent Greg Schnell (Junior Jackson Racing). Chad Johnson put up a podium finish on Friday (3rd) at Albany and Kevin Johnson notched his first victory of the season on Saturday. After four races Chad Johnson is in 3rd place overall with 62 points, Schnell’s in 4th with 60 points and Kevin Johnson is in 5th place overall with 58 points.

In the AMA Arenacross Lites class veteran Jim Neese had a big weekend in Albany, going 1-2 overall in the two nights of racing.
