It's official: Dirt Wurx will build Daytona SX course
AMA calls on country's premier SX/MX track design and
construction company to put the blueprint and dozers to Daytona
International Speedway's legendary infield supercross track
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Feb. 28, 2006) - Dirt Wurx USA's president Rich
Winkler announced that Dirt Wurx will be the track builder for the
Daytona Supercross By Honda scheduled for Friday night, March 10 at
historic Daytona International Speedway.
"I'm happy the series now has a consistent track builder for all the
events," said AMA's race manager Steve Whitelock. "This was something
I've spoke with the officials at Daytona on a number of occasions. So
this year we'll have a joint effort between the AMA, Daytona and Dirt
Wurx and will work to move forward with having Rich and Dirt Wurx as
our regular track builder at Daytona in the years to come."
Winkler, who used to race AMA MX Nationals as a pro back in the day,
was excited about leading his track construction team onto the hallowed
grounds of Daytona International Speedway - the birthplace of
supercross in the eastern United States.
"Daytona will for sure be one of the more unique supercross tracks we
build all year," said Winkler. "It may not be as technically difficult
as putting a supercross track over a synthetic turf field inside a
domed stadium in the middle of winter, but there are aspects of the
design and construction that will be tough."
This year's Daytona Supercross By Honda will feature a much-anticipated
battle between four-time Daytona Supercross By Honda champion Ricky
Carmichael, two-time defending Daytona Supercross By Honda champion
Chad Reed and the always popular James Stewart.
Reed will be trying for his third straight Daytona Supercross By Honda
victory aboard a Yamaha. Carmichael, a native of Havana, Fla., is
seeking a record fifth triumph in the Daytona Supercross By Honda.
Carmichael, who rides a Suzuki, is currently tied with Jeff Stanton
with four victories.
"When I go to Daytona, I always have a special feeling," said
Carmichael, who finished second to Reed in the 2005 Daytona Supercross
By Honda.
Stewart, riding for Kawasaki, will be a fan favorite racing in front of
his home crowd. The rider is from nearby Haines City, Fla., and
captured a Supercross Lites victory at DIS in 2004.
