Ryan Villopoto proved once again that he won’t hesitate to pull away if he gets up front early. Justin Barcia kept him company for the first few laps, but Villopoto put in a string of flawless laps to stretch his lead. Ryan Dungey started around fifth, so he wasn’t initially a factor up front at the beginning of the race.
Tyla Rattray and Malcolm Stewart enjoyed a top-five starts in third and fourth place, respectively. Stewart, however dropped back around fifteenth place after a mishap in one of the back sections. Rattray held down third place until Dungey moved up to make the pass on him. Dungey would also pass Barcia for second, but by then, Villopoto was nowhere in sight.
Villopoto and Dungey had matching lap times—for the most part—in the second half of the first moto. Lappers were abundant, but Villopoto didn’t have any issues finding lines through traffic. The first-moto win went to Villopoto, with Dungey and Barcia rounding out the podium. Tyla Rattray and Josh Grant grabbed their first top-five results of the season.
