None of the above !
3 votes for Short?? 4 for Grant?? Brayton even got a vote!!
Based on his performance at the MEC, Barcia seems like an obvious choice. He showed his starts and speed were not left behind on the 250's as he put both on display at the Cup. Justin also looked calm, confident and poised, he did not rush , let the race come to him, Stanton seems to have gotten through to him.
Trey is a bit of a question mark, coming off two seasons of dealing with devastating injury, where will his mental state be? We know he has the speed and talent to run up front, but will Canard have the Comfort & Confidence required to ride to his full potential?
After those two, it seems to be a toss up between Weimer and Milsaps. They both have shown flashes their speed, but poor starts and inconstancy plague both. Weimer being on a solid program and around RV should have benefited him, which gives Jake the edge over Milsaps. Davi, who has gotten back on a Suzuki, a brand he rode with great success in his youth, should feel right at home and back up to speed.
I wish I could throw K-Dubs name in the hat, but with all the talent out there today it will be tough for him to be in the mix. I do think he will have one or two special rounds where he has the crowd on it's feet cheering for the 14 Honda.
I know this was a what if kind of question, but hopefully we see Villopoto, Reed, Stewart and Dungey be pushed by Barcia, Canard, Weimer and Milsaps for the entire season. The title being decided at the final round, where any one of 3 riders could win the crown. That would full fill every one on here's most mentioned Christmas wish!!!
alright billc you know barcia is the most likly one as DW is back to 250's, I would put TC about equal to him though god I hope he can stay uninjured !!!
What about Broc Tickle ...with RC as a coach and on good suzuki equipment...could be a sleeper....But I think we will see the same guys (RV,RD,CR,JS) out front in the end.
Weimer would have a chance, if there was a woman's SX championship.
heres how I would rate the list
Barcia 11% chance at title
Canard 10%
Weimer 3%
Brayton 3%
Short 1%
milsaps .5%
grant .4%
Yes, Tickle should be on that list. Former 250sx champ has some skills and if the team behind him does what it is capable of, Broc might be close or the podium. He does kind of slide under the rader, good catch Farscape40..
@BD
good observations but I have to disagree to a point. Barcia looked really fast at MEC but I didn't see the calmness and patience you refer to. I keep re-watching the races and am amazed he didn't crash as he was on the ragged edge numerous times. His bike was completely sideways coming through the braking bumps into the turn after the start stretch as he was trying to get by Reed.....and of course there was the high-speed foray out onto the concrete after the big sweeper.
While I agree he's the favorite on this list to win a race I also think he will suffer some soil samples. He will certainly make it very interesting this winter. Have a feeling Reed is gonna lose his patience with this guy at some point.
Ripdown.. Justin did and does ride the ragged edge, it is his riding style, and I agree he will take some soil samples, this his rookie season with the big boys.. I was referring to the mental side of it, he did not seem to get rattled while dicing with Reed, Dungey or Villopoto and he played it smart around Alessi. I could be wrong, but I think Stanton has Justin's head in a good place..He will be a factor if indeed he has found his Zen...
Ripdown - I feel that in order to go fast enough to win this years SX c'ship we will see EVERY legitimate contender take a dirt sample...the question is - whose "bad day" will be the least bad.
In the last couple of years we have seen numerous "bad days" by Stewart - that is all I'll say about that...
we have seen a few "bad days" by RV - failing to qualify for a main in 2011 and busting up his knee (I know - post c'ship)
We have seen a bad day from Reed - (Houston)
Canard - will never forget that one...
Dungey - Chain derail in 2011 and broken collar bone in practice...
My point is - with the current AMA points allotment you have to be hovering around the top three with a smattering of wins to be a legitimate contender...if a guy like...lets say Weimer or tickle thinks they can hover around 6th or 7th place and wait for the obvious contenders to crash out they will be looking at a two race deficit in points by round number five.
Of the list posted above it is true that Barcia should be considered the favorite - he, in his first race beat all the contenders save JS and TC - if they were there I still think the results would have been the same...save for Mike Alessi who has been anywhere near a good a starter as Barcia? In the 450 class that skill (consistent starts) is as good as gold.
I would agree Barcia is in a better place mentally......doesn't seem to be intimidated....
That being said the MEC is a bit of a Novelty event. The big boys may (will) get a little more serious when Championship points are on the line. If JB can keep things in perspective and collect the points available to him without throwing it away there will be some pretty bruised egos by the time Vegas roles around.
Novelty event - for sure..but it still had a gate, dirt, turns and jumps....
@ dino
you forgot Diana (miss SX)
Just sayin.....once your chances at a mil are gone most guys primary focus is to get through it without injury so as not to jeopardize the real deal. Barcia and Tomac had a little extra incentive...wanting to prove they belong with the 'Big Boys'
Just my opinion......
Barcia hands down. Hec he may win with all the four guys there. I say 2013 is gonna be the last for JS7. If he doesnt make that Suzuki work, he is DONE. Its time to do something else. I'd like to see CHAD win one more before he retires. REED also hint that 2013 may be his last then he will just be manager at 22. RV2, we dont know how well that knee is gonna hold up so for 2013 Im gonna go with DUNGEY as the strongest guy right now. Remember Dungey qualified faster than RV and looked to be right there with him at MEC b4 the shifter issues. DUNGEy has the confidence needed and I think 2013 he will put a stamp on any doubters out there. RD is NOT my FAv but just saying it like it is. He has confidence and momentum on his side. I'd like to See Reedy win it but i like the agressive Chad we saw at millville and Texas SX
Dungey's problems will be the nights he dosesn't get a good start.....his style is not condusive to moving through the pack in a short SX format.....especially with the addition of Barcia who generally gets good starts..
Barcia can start , he can pass and he can wail on the fourfity....he will see RVs tire disappearing for at least a lap.....
Ripdown! You are right! I am in love with her straight up!
Staying healthy is always the big question but unless RV gets hurt he is at another level in SX and will win convincingly. RD will be there if he makes a mistake. I think JB will fair better than CR. Yes he rides on the edge but that's what it takes to win. Ride on the edge but don't crash. Who knows maybe JS will keep it oni two wheels and make a run at RV. I do know if everyone stays healthy some of the podium finishers from last season will be lucky to get a top 10.
So the guy that finished 2nd in the Nationals doesn't even get on the list of the top 11 threats for 2012 SX? I know Alessi needs to own the whoops to make it happen, but only Millsaps (266 pts) Brayton (257) and Weimer (229) on the list above finished ahead of MA (206) at the end of the 2011 SX series . . . he should be on the above list of the 'guys that could get a title if the top 4 all crash out 5 times in 17 races'.
I see the red plate being passed around while attrition sets in. Possibly after Daytona the front runners will be narrowed down and a dark horse will appear.
Broc Tickle should have been on the poll. If the chemistry is right on that team, I can see BT gaining on the pack as the season progresses.
Fans will win big this season and if you are eligible for an AARP card you may want to keep your blood pressure meds close by during the races. haha
Ripdown Thats what i have said a few times about RD, They will ALL have a harder time getting up front after a bad start but RD will have the most trouble!! The Class is stacked and i am still holding out hope that Tomac will be there too.
BillC- Just how much competition do you need out there? LOL It's looking more and more like we will have around ten guys that could win on any night! That would be baring any injuries, of course. Oh yeah, this is lookin' good! hate the "off" season. And Preston, come on now. We all know who your guy is, and that's just fine. But, all kidding aside. Could one person win ALL the races this year considering the competition? I think not. But as I type this I realize you were just stirring the pot. And I bit. You win today I guess. lol
It technically wasn't 100% Canards fault he got hurt last season. Sure, he got a little tight, picked up a toughblock cover, but that shouldn't even be possible. They need to hire an art guy that maintains a paint job.
Motodog---
The field was completely depleted since the last 3/4 of SX. All Dungeys 1-1's and the other guys 2-5 finishes were a product of the sun, stars and moon aligning. I'll bet you $100 that none of those guys, minus maybe a 3rd for Windham, Weimer or Millsaps touch the podium.
Not to say they suck. By no means. The guy running 20th (sx) and 40th (mx) could stomp any one of our asses, but they aren't on RV, Reed or Dungeys level by any stretch.
last 1/4 sx i meant...
GOAT or not, i just can't see Tickle being in the run.
It's gonna be all RV, CR, RD, JB, TC, Kdub and .....sigh, JS (maybe....3 years, shit results).....Either way ya there are 10 guys that can light it up
Barcia definately showed he can run with the big dogs. But he wont take the campionship. I see him probably,4th, maybe 5th at seasons end.
Do we know the TV schedule yet? If I have to endure any of that CBS shit this season I am going to have an anurism...remember? where local affiliates could pre-emt the broadcast to show us programs on how to plant dafodills or effin high school spelling bee's...wait...that was ESPN. Sorry.
luckily i've not been screwed out of any races that way.
If any one of those guys wins the supercross title- it means everyone got hurt [again].
But- I would definitly pick Barcia over Canard by a large factor. Brayton and Grant shouldnt even be on this list- and where is the #800 at?
I believe that Barcia really is a threat for the 2014 title. Once he ages a bit more and tempers his "enthusiasm" that he showed at the Des Nations, he will be a much more potent rider.
I predict a Villopoto/Barcia rivalry since they both ride with so much passion. Both of them get away with manoevers that would land anyone else in plaster for 6-8 weeks.
As much as it pains me to say it, JS and CR are just getting old, and this will limit their impact on the overall championship, although their ability to win will never be questioned, just their age related durability. I felt the same about Windham - which is undoubtedly the most talented pure rider I have ever witnessed. Even RC recognized that time waits for no man.
If I were to prognosticate, I see Dungey sitting as my favorite since Barcia and Villopoto will be trying to spin their throttle grip and we all know that stuff happens out there. Trey is my absolute favorite darkhorse, but the big dirt naps add alot of virtual age to a body.
I will be rooting for them all, though. I don't care who wins, all I care is to see young men giving it 100.00% riding a savagely powerful work of technology, and fearlessly attacking a rude and unforgiving track.
Oh, and to have all of this action seamlessly brought into my home, live, while I recline and offer a running commentary on the action to anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot. Warning: Doritos will be harmed.
Not to start any crap, I would NOT have had Stewart in that question, he hasnt been close to a title in years.. He will win a few races, but he WILL NOT beat RV or Dungey or even Reed over the course of an entire season.. 4TH place is the best he has managed in about 3 years now..
RV & RD TO LOSE and JS7 to finish and win........ Reed is to old and so is JS7 but he is the only one I see giving them a run Barcia is going to win but doesnt have the experience yet needs at least 1 year on big bikes
@BD25~Barcia is fast, no question. I don't think he is top contender beyond the other 4 simply because he will not be consistent enough in this class. Mark my words, he will have his struggles with Weimer, Milsaps, and Shorty. I am a fan of Barcia but he cannot beat TC straight up. I know TC has a confidence issue to master but one on one TC beats Barcia 80% of the time.
@someguy~JS will not finish the season
JB 51 is my pick to win the 2013 sx title with the other 4 riders included,.....LOL...He will surprise only the stupid fans ...you know the ones that think Yamahas are bad bikes because bubba crashed a few times on it...LOL...RV2 is the fastest lap time but he has a history like Bubba....AKA that speed touches dirt every once and awhile...Just like the MEC...Barcia will beat Dungeyand Reed and holeshot like Alessi...Gonna be interesting!!!!
2nd in points last year gets 2%
You guys are funny
I'd like to say Trey, realistically Barcia, and hopefully WINDHAM.
@j w621557 - Neither will Canard
