Steel City is gone?
Just what I was going to say...
Too close to HighPoint. I believe the TBA is in Indiana.
No Freestone is a bummer. Not that I'm a fan of the track, but its the closest one to home. I guess we'll have to travel this year if it jives with juniors own race schedule. I never understood with all the great natural terrain in Texas why they picked a cow pasture to build a track. You could build an awesome layout with great red dirt in East Texas.
It is still crazy we have no national pro race in the state of FL. I like the addition of TN however FL is to important to motocross not to have a race. I offered to buy property here in FL and invest $500,000 into the facilities if the folks in WV wanted to talk about bringing a race here. Guess what? They never returned my call! I made it very clear what I was wanting to do as well.
The other issue is that the SoCAL desert gets to hot after June and they need to have the Socal race first and then FL..................then go north and back west. End it in Hangtown as it is cooler there in the summer than Socal. Think of the riders and fans!
It honestly doesn't surprise me that Freestone is gone. They've had a lot of problems with the heat. I mean come on, Texas in the middle of summer? If they had it more towards the end of the series I could see it sticking around but I really think a big part of it was the heat.
Aug 17th... Miller Motorsport Park, Utah!
Ok if freestone had a national in august at the end of the series it would be much worse! august is the hottest part of summer for us.
When the national is in may, its hot but nothing like august! just saying
Tough string of races for low budget operations towards the end of the season: Massachusetts, Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, New York.. yikes
Promises broken again. The TN race is not in the Southeast! What a bunch of BS. Come on Davey you can do better than this.
I am very thankfull AMA Motocross is still alive and well ...It does not matter where we have to travel to race..everyone will all show up ready to go...
Aug 17- Crawfordsville,IN- Home of the Iron Man
@Jacenelson87 ,, Look up the temp in Millville at the National in 2011.. I was there. Not exaclty sure what the temp was on Saturday during the race, but on Sunday ( Ameteur Day) it was 100 deg with a heat index of 120 deg. It was miserable. Dont get me wrong, Texas is obviously hot. That race just may be to early in the season to deal with those temps.
I tell ya' what...we up here in in the mid-atlantic will give one National (Budds, High Pt, or Steel City) for one Supercross within 4 hrs travel....until then, I want my Steel City race back!!
Two strokes are dead, man...the only thing that cost less is the maintenance anymore. The new 2-strokes are damn near the same price as a 4 stroke. Go check out that new KTM 250sx price and tell me I'm wrong.
Nice. Southwick is early...
lol, '78...I'll take it!!
@ motoxer4533 you think Buchannon, MI. The most famous RED BUD! Is low Budget?
I can't believe they took away the Freestone National, that was the highlight of my entire year. I know the track isn't that great, but the facilities are first class. Huge facility, lots of camping, multiple tracks, great place to spend a long weekend. That race separated the boys from the men (i remember Bagett crying in a trash can). So with the exception of the Lake Elsinore track every race is in the northern part of the US? That sucks! So where are the people from the south supposed to travel to watch a race? Ive been to Lakewood and i wasn't that impressed, small facility, its right next to the interstate, and power lines are everywhere. I wonder if the riders had any say in it, or if it was just pencil pushing desk jockeys.
Southwick in June means the hottest and most humid part of the summer in the Northeast. 85-90 if not hotter and 60-65% humidity... there's no way to avoid the heat.
Also, it's too bad to lose Steel City, lots of history on that track, lots of good championship battles.
They should have kept Steel City and gotten rid of Lake Elsinore.
@KrayeZ -
My statement of "low budget" was towards privateers & the like that don't have much operation money. The point I was making is that driving across the country for 2 months straight is not cheap and must be difficult.
It is supposed to be hot. And humid. And rough. It is motocross.
I don't what the track is or where but if they are moving tracks to make them smoother and cooler they have the wrong sport.
How about LA in August? A little gulf state heat and humidity?
Would like the TBA to be in Florida.Gatorback anyone?.
@Slim473 A little off topic but a KTM 250SX is $7099, while a 450SX-F is $8999. You could put a big bore kit on the 250 and still have over a grand left in your pocket. I guarantee in the AMA used their amateur displacement rules for the pros there would be alot of 2 strokes on the track.
Southwick in June is fine by me. Late August seems to be when we get a lot of rain.
@Graz11 I'd love to see a race at Gatorback, but August in Florida would be far worse than May in Texas weather wise.
Every listen to yesterdays DMXS radio show with Davey Coombs. It will tell all about the new nationals and why.He also said we should be able to see all 4 motos live.
I thought Thunder Valley was supposed to be next on the chopping block? C'mon, their attendance this year was pathetic!
Lake Elsinore at the peak of summer again?? Oh well won't stop me but man do i feel bad for people with small kids because people were dropping like flies from the heat this year.
Finally a National at Muddy Creek TN. Alot of greats have raced there like Damon Bradshaw, Larry Ward, Kevin Windham, Mike Brown, Rickey Carmiachael, Broc Tickle, & the list goes on. I know that Sam Gammon & crew have been trying of years to get a National & I'm sure they do a great job hosting.
@Jonesymx29 - June is the hottest and most humid part of the summer in the Northeast? You ever been here? Southwick used to always be May or June. I like to see the 'wick and Unadilla broken up a little. This year it was two races in two weeks. I'd go no matter when they were, but I like the spacing. It was even better when it was Southwick in June, 'dilla in July and BT in August! Those were the days!
I'm sure there a plenty of things for the organizers to consider, but it seems nutty to me to put a west coast date like Washougal where it resides in the schedule. Why not after Hangtown or before Elsinore? The way it is, all those teams have to zig-zag back and forth across nearly the entire country.
If you look at CycleNews.com's website, it says the new location will be in Indiana, although it doesn't state the location. Honestly, none of the tracks I've raced in Indiana over the years is capable of a national.
Oops, after re-reading the article it does say at Crawfordsville. Thought that was just woods stuff.
Muddy Creek is a great track they run it like clockwork, awesome dirt that they created over the years and good for spectating. They should switch the direction back around and put the stairway to heaven back in,I have not been there for a while but I thought it was better that way.Very fun either way, should be a good event.
Monster Mountain MX in Alabama is a possibility for the TBA.
Bristol baby yea!!!! Guarantee a big crowd. I live in NC and it will take about 4 1/2 hours to get there but I WILL be there. Thank you DC!
Now, please get one somewhere in mid to south Georgia and it will sell out also....
In the summer, Florida is usually cooler than farther inland in the southeast and Texas due to being surrounded by water. Last summer there was many a day where central Texas was over 100 and central Florida was high 80's
I think it was good to get southwick away from the hurricane season. I don't agree that it gets that hot and humid in June either. Spring is just ending by then. I do wish there was a break before it though, so we could bring back the Invitational.
They get rid of one lame one,Freestone, and replace it with one that even looks lamer,Lake Elsinore.Who's calling the shots here?Thinking it's not the fans. Broome-Tioga was my favorite, still there just used for local races and I believe N.Y.S Championship, I no there not gonna bring it back, but just sayin
Swan, Tyler TX would be awesome.
There should be 12 rounds of circus cross and 16 rounds of MX, that would be the best.
When are they going to announce the Film Festival 8 contestants to get voted on?
The track itself at Freestone and Elsinore looked pretty comparable, although the soil seemed better at Freestone (how could it not be?). Both looked very flat. I haven't been there, so I can't speak to the facilities themselves.
Wasn't there an article just on here that was talking about how fun Gatorback was? Seems if they can handle all the traffic of the Mini-Os, they could handle a pro national. I'm sure there other factors I'm not aware of.
"Cheers to DC for giving up one of the tracks he has connections with. It shows he is in it for the right reasons".
@ misoheye, you do know the Coombs family runs the GNCC's right? Leaving a stop on the MX tour for one on the GNCC tour is just the 'ole shell game. Furthermore, I was unaware "the right reasons" included monetary incentives. A selfless act would be more believable as consideration for "the right reasons".
Logistically, wouldn't it make more sense to "loop" the series? I can think of a few budgets that would appreciate not having to cross the Mississippi more than once.
Freestone being gone is a huge disappointment. I'm sure Tony Miller was a huge reason why Freestone ever got the race in the first place because, yeah, the track was nothing to write home about. Swan would be a good viable option for a national in Texas but the pro challenge seems to be as "official" as Swan is ever going to get.
Where a national should have always been was Lake Whitney but now that its gone I don't see us getting another Outdoor National anytime soon. I distinctly remember a certain someone at Racer X writing an article about how Texas motocross riders were babied/pampered and how Texas tracks were smooth as glass and too easy. And how we'd never produce any good pro riders because of this (nevermind all of the pros today that grew up racing local in Texas). And yet the Pros can't even show up to race in May (what we consider nice riding weather)... hilarious.
No Freestone? are you kidding? What a shame...
I'm lovin' the Muddy Creek race, I'm 15 mins up the road in Gray TN, the home of Mike Brown. I gonna stop with the lottery tickets cause i just hit it big, an MX National just up the road.
The nationals just won't be the same without steel city, they should drop high point before steel city. If they're looking for a track in a different east state they should do Monster Mountain over in Alabama. They have great elevation changes and the soil there is as good or better than any pro national track anywhere. Not sure if they have a ton of moto fans out in that area or not, but that track is sick!
Don't worry Texans if I ever win the lotto I'm going to build a track in East Texas that makes Washougal look flat. Or if there are any MX philantropists out there that want to give me the money that'll work too. Maybe if I put some solar panels or wind mills on the property Baracka Claus would give it to me?
Guess I'll be heading to High Point next year, RIP Steel City
OK, so it looks like were limiting each state now to "one" outdoor national to help evenly spread the joy of motocross across the country and help the economy within each of those states. "OH" wait, California has a nice pair of bookends to even things out? I guess that makes sense since they only have 5 supercross races in the beginning of the year. Really?
This is a shameful day when the media gets to dictate what tracks will be on the circuit due to money. Broome-Tioga got chopped because they didn't want to pay what MX Sports wanted (cough cough) I mean Racer X. Same thing happened to Glen Helen. Lake Elsinore was a huge fail this year but they are still on the circuit. But they signed a multimillion dollar deal with MX Sports Alli Sports and NBC. All partner companies by the way. I hear from the guys at Southwick that MX338 may be next. The North East doesn't even have a Supercross race so losing another National is going to hurt! Thanks D.C good call!
With most of the factories based in California They should drop Lake Elsinore and bring back Glenn Hellen.. And with most of the riders living in Florida or Georgia, the southeast should have at least one national. Its a no brainer.
Florida,Florida, Florida. Gatorback, Gatorback, Gatorback
JonR145 & Moto663, Monster Mountain is a badass track, I go down there in the winter to ride.Worth the trip.
I agree bring back Gatorback. I don't see any reason to cut Steel City or Texas. Both are good tracks for racing. Texas was one of the best races this year. Steel City is legendary they have been racing there since 1988. I hope all this new money coming in is going to increase the purse money for the riders.
Hangtown is awesome, Glen Helen was awesome, Pala was pretty spectator friendly, Elsinore looked pretty crappy. Steele City being dropped sounds like a bad idea. Hope Unadilla never gets the axe!!! Motocross politics sucks!!!
Elsinore was terrible this season their was no shade at all and like what has already been said feel sorry for the little kids because the heat was crazy...Spectating wise it was garbage it was flat but then in the middle you had a big ole hill so you can only see half the track and the layout sucked...Its a bummer their was issues with the Glen Helen owners and DC because that is the only So Cal track that can have a National comfortably even with the heat and its spectator friendly
Steel City was real MX. Freestone & Elsinore flat outside SX.
Bring Gatorback back! It is a classic MX track.
I would love to see Glen Helen back on the schedule.....love that track. Will probably never happen though.
Wouldn't mind seeing Gainesville back either
WTF- I just went to my first AMA race this year and it was at Steel City, had the time of my life and had decided to make it an annual tradition from now on since I am from Canada. NOT SO MUCH THANKS TO DC!!!!! Not only has he screwed us out of watching it on TV in Canada (no access to NBC sports) he has just erased the one race I was going to go to! I guess he doesn't care about us Canadian fans!
Man, that blows! No FREESTONE????????
Man, that blows! No FREESTONE????????
Good luck finding a better venue than Steel City anywhere. Who cares if it's close to High Point. Lots of spectators, an epic track, and great racing all win in my book.
august 17th should be ohio international raceway.awesome track with lots of natural elevation, decent lap times, and amazing dirt
RD flys at Freestone and so does the 800. Bet their mad.
Looks like they have the travel a LOT nicer with this line up. Not criss crossing the country as bad as it was.
For the past 20 something years I have always wished for a National at Muddy Creek. With it`s deep loam, natural terrain that rivals all of the "old motocross sanctuaries, ideal weather and viewing platform. This is a great event and to finally have a national in the southeast ........I just can`t describe. It always sucks to lose an historic moto/supercross venue and I know the pain all to well.
It does look like less travel. If they stuck Washougal on the Aug 17 date and the TBA was in the east or central somewhere, it would be even better. Red Bud and Millville aren't that far away from each other, but they have to go to Washington in between the two.
In a perfect world...
First part the same
July 13 Spring Creek National Millville, Minn.
July 27 Gainsville National
August 3 Unadilla National New Berlin, N.Y.
August 17 Washougal National Washougal, Wash.
August 24 Lake Elsinore National Lake Elsinore, Calif
In one year, Southern California sells more bikes than practically the rest of the country combined. Also, five of "the big five" are located here. I wouldn't count on seeing the MX & SX races going away from So.Cal. any time soon, unless of course the promoters think they don't need the motorcycle manufacturer's blessings.
Way to "cover curse" Barcia! How 'bout putting stills of bikes on the Dec / Jan covers?
I will miss Steel City, but can't say as I am surprised, it being about 3 clicks from High Point as the crow flies and High Point being a Nationals founbding track. I am glad to see Freestone gone though, flat, boring, outdoor supercross that it was. But is Muddy Creek much better? It's not flat exactly, but it doesn't seem to have serious elevation changes, plus it seems small. The TBA is tantalizing. Dare I say it - Glen Helen?
@Chunderpot--The word on a couple other sites say the TBA will be Crwfordville Indiana.. Which is great for me because its close, but the track is new and was just being built a year ago.. I am also glad Freestone is gone, it was a glorified supercross track.. But the So Cal crowd has their race in Lake Elsinore, they dont need another, they already get almost half the Supercross season..
The TBA is in the West. Freestone is out because the attendance was low (because it's too far from hotels etc) and was too hot for everybody (riders, crew, and many spectators). Muddy creek will be a bonus. Elsinore won't be around for long. Glen Helen will never deal with MX Sports, but the yare having the Moto Des in 2015.
Many factors are in the mix to determine who gets a national. Sadly the actual track is fairly low on the list. The ability to get the semi's in, Tv coverage ability, proximity to hotels, stores and highways, weather, medical access, regional population, parking, pit size, phone & data ability. traffic flow after the race (Pala) The ability to attract sponsors at the local level. Then the track, water, scoring tower, start & staging, staff.
These are only a few of the factors before you even talk about $$$$$ Also you have to consider placingtwo races too close together, you think Red Bud wants another race within 100 of theres, never!
One thing to consider MX Sports has only 2013 left in their contract with DMG everything could change in 2014.
why cant they create a series that could save money and time? hangtown, colorado, tenn.,highpoint, budds creek, southwick, unadilla, red bud, minnesota, washougal, elsinore. tba, if its california add it at the end, if its indiana stick it betwwen red bud and minnesota, if its florida put it between colorado and tenn,. one big loop instead of criss crossing the country
OK OK....just give Steel City the 2 Stroke National sponsored by FMF! or the Vet nationals. C'mon Davie Coombs. Heinz Fiels never had a supercross....now that would be awesome.
I understand that tough choices have to be made, but like many others I am quite upset that Texas isn't on the schedule. The track is flat ... yes ... but for anyone that had the pleasure of sitting in the Texas 12 Pack section would have a hard time calling the track "lame". I had the best viewing experience of my life at the last race (my letter was published in Racer X, got to visit with the Tomacs and give them updates on the gap between Eli and Blake B, plus radio updates!). I live about 2 hours from the track, so driving to another national probably won't be in the cards for me. As a former MXer who had been away from the sport for more than a decade, Freestone had lured me back into really following the sport. It was a fun ride while it lasted (amazingly my home town of Austin can support Formula 1, yet Texas can't keep a national MX race ... sad).
Heard mx sports was screwin with the ritchie family/red bud. i know they will shut it down before they give up control to a jewish conglomerate. i just wish they would bring back 3 class format 125 2 stroke/250 2 stroke/450 4 stroke that way when the harleys, i mean 450s get to the second moto , i can get a head start on the traffic
have always held a grudge against reed, henry an yamaha for starting that 4 stroke crap back up,hell i can deal with any outdoor location, flat screen bring it in your house, cant go to most anyhow, saturday races did help for the long haul ones
