Eleven points separated Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett and GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia as the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship embarked on Southwick. But another title contender, Barica’s GEICO Honda teammate Eli Tomac, has yet to relinquish his championship hopes.
Just one week after winning the prestigious AMA Horizon Award, GEICO Honda rookie Zach Bell shook the 250 landscape by grabbing the early lead over Tomac and Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin. But the shocking run from Bell ended prematurely as he suffered a big crash and had to pull off. Meanwhile, Barcia was buried mid-pack after getting swallowed in a first turn pileup.
Facing a thirty-two point deficit entering Southwick, Tomac is essentially in a must-win situation as the series enters the home stretch. And it showed at Moto-X 338, as Tomac crushed the field en route to the moto one win. Marvin Musquin would take home second with points leader Blake Baggett rounding out the podium. Barcia charged back to finish 7th, salvaging valuable championship points.
