Matthes how would you know, you`re too fat to ride.
@cxd56 LMAO Should be "Worst food I ever ate" LOL
Matthes didn't even write it you dumb shits
Oh well, still got a laugh out of it lol
They forgot the 1976 Bultaco Pursang mine blow up 20 times in 1 season I would have made expert that's how many times I was leading and had the seize up tighter than my first girlfiend.
Whewwww! Didn't see (one) of my bikes on that list of (wonder) bikes. Now I can breathe again!
PS "Off Subject Totally" but, why would you commentors who use numbers for your names to protect your childish, immature real selves, feel you need bring up and or mention someones physical stature, to better your own self image, at someone else's expense. It is people like you that give the right to interact through commentary a bad name. If you cannot act mature and show some respect for others, there are many other places on the internet to display your gauche and disrespectful behavior towards your fellow 2 wheel enthusiasts.
In summary, "Grow Up"
Great article.... I loved all of the colorful descriptions...
But I have to point out that the 1998 KTM 125 was the fastest 125 of that year... the YZ was and still a very fast bike and is a close second in total 125 HP... not knocking the YZ here.. but the KTM was at the top of the 125 HP chart and still is.
1982 maico 490 alpha 1 265 lbs mine grenaded And for the record "Caseyporns" ,they were funny and your uptight ( like his first girlfriend). You grow up and we'll keep laughing.
I am a little TOO familiar with too many of these bikes. The Orange Tank (71) TM400 was my 1st Open bike. Bought it with a friend as a basket case (literally, it was all apart and in 6-7 baskets) in late '72 for about nothing. Figured it couldn't be as bad as they said. Built it, tested it, crapped pants, sold it to an older guy. Prayed he didn't have kids.
SC500.. was asked to co-ride one in a 3-hr Hare Scrambles. I grew late, was used to 125s, and I mostly remember it being huge and heavy. There were two 1/2 mile mostly smooth fields to cross, and it sure made up a lot of ground. But then it wouldn't stop... killed many saplings..
Husky 125... I just know that they were never very good. Ever. Loved Huskys, almost bought the 250Mag, but the 125 was never their good bike. Too bad, the 1974? yellow tanker was gorgeous.
Had the 1983 CR-480 and yes, it was THAT awesome. Off the chart awesome. Which DOES make it strange that it was derived from the 81 CR450. How the 81 could be so awful and the 82 and esp the 83 be so great is astonishing. And then... wtf?, they come out with the 84 CR500. If you had the 83 CR480 you kept it. I knew guys who sold them and bought them back. Maybe the best Open class motor ever (certainly Japanese). Handled like the 250. Guys put the 86 forks (and disc brake) on 480s and considered them better than the new Hondas until the 92 CR500. BTW, the 84 moved the chain to the left side; 81-83 being on the right.
ADHD Note: 1st time I saw the Suzuki RMZ250F was at the RM Cup event in 2003 (Washougal) as they had a non-running prototype sitting under a tent. I remember the announcer saying that this was probably the last race any of us would ever go to and only hear 2-strokes. Was glad he pointed that out and drank it in.
Sigh.
They also left out the Harley Davidson 250. that bike was only made for one or two years in 77-78? That thing couldnt stay together, and how can you forget those Can Ams in the 80s, they were TANKS !
@ Elsinore Racer... the 1999 to current Husky CR 125 (and WR) is an amazing bike with a pretty big cult following... handles like a dream and the motor has TORQUE... these are very special bikes... just keep getting better. I have no idea about Huskys before that... maybe they were ALL heavy and slow... but the late model Husky 125 is my favorite bike ever...and I am not the only one...
1985 KTM 500 MXC, brought it home from dealer, Kickstarted it , it back fired and cracked the CASES IN HALF ! Austria shipped it with wrong ignition. KTM Next day aired a new motor at no cost to me.............6 months later after coming up short on jump (as usual lol) at Raceway Park I realized that I was riding a Chopper cause the shock shaft snapped !! To KTM's credit they asked my dealer if it was the same guy who had the motor issue, and they covered it as well,,,,Remember this was a "No Warrenty Bike" That's why That's why I Buy KTM
Great article ...I was sceptical of the what the choices would be but i must agree these where some major tu*rds, please do part two as there are plenty more. Just because some commenters bike seized or there lack of skill or maintenance does not a tu*rd make. Please add the 72 Husky 5speed 400/450 'concussion master'. @caseypons ..lol .....son ,your in the wrong part of town....
Wow! The cr500r was my first bike when I was 27. I had rode a friends cr125 when I was 15 and loved it. I was broke then and found this cr500r in pieces from a friend when I was 27. I rebuilt this and it looked awesome! Not kidding about hard starts and scary fast. What a bike to learn on:). The sand at the little Sahara took its toll on the top end. This article was right on. I have had a dozen bikes since then but always will remember this machine. My e mail was putz500r and still will be for ever!!
Loved my my old XR75 back in the day. Only 4 stroker on the track and those 2 strokes would come screaming by and scare the hell out of me. How things have changed.
BMXerHS,
About the Husky 125... I was referring to the era of Husky 125s featured in the story. Then came the Cagivas and now the current Husky 125 is a KTM, is that right? Kind of a stretch to think I was drawing a parallel between the 1974 Swedish and 2012 Italo-German versions.
HandlebarDragger,
Good list, but maybe not fair to the Hodaka 250 as it was not a motocrosser.
How about the Harley Baja 100 instead?

I had a Suzuki TM400...and lived to tell about it!
My 1984 YZ125 was by far the slowest P.O.S. I have ever owned. An 80cc bike could beat it in a drag race. It fell apart at nearly every race. I seized the engine the second moto of its short life. The plastic cracked on the first ride ever. I bought new plastic and it cracked on its first ride. TOTAL GARBAGE! The next 20 bikes I bought were Hondas,Kawasakis, and 1 Suzuki. I did get free Hondas in 1986 though. oh yea!
I'm still laughing at some of the descriptions of these bikes (especially the comments to the pictures).
how about top ten 24/7 stewart obsessed stalkers....1 thru 10 are scrubnuts.....
Gee why were most of the wost bikes open class? I raced open class for a while the only real bad one ,and I did not race it after riding it was the silver tank black stripe 500 cc Yamaha. I though I was on a TM 400 again??
My last ride was 250 of the year, 85 YZ 250. That BASS system was a joke, but not as bad as the bike my buddy bought (85 YZ 125). 1/2 way into the year he threw it in the corner of his garage and bought a 85 KX 125 and proceeded to fill his garage up with trophies and start running A class. I remember a fat kid on a KX 80 smoking his 85 YZ 125 outside the pit area practicing starts, God that was funny.
