Official PR: Reed out for Supercross

Monday, February 20, 2012 | 6:15 PM

Carlsbad, California – In a devastating blow for TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed, injuries sustained at last weekend’s Dallas round of the AMA Supercross, have forced him to retire from the remainder of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship.

Reed suffered a horrific crash while challenging for the race lead on Lap 7 and was unable to finish the race.

Initial scans have revealed the Australian has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, broken his tibia and fibula, sustained two broken ribs and has a broken T6 vertebrae.

At this point in time doctors are waiting for the swelling on his knee to subside before they conduct surgery.

“To say I am hurting right now would be a major understatement,” Reed said. “I am just trying to figure out what hurts more, the injuries or the fact that I am going to be out for a while with knee surgery.

“This is bitterly disappointing, I felt like I had everything in my corner this time. I’ve never felt more comfortable, from the bike and team to my riding.

“I was genuinely in a position to fight for race wins week in week out and expected to be going to Las Vegas for a shot at the title.

“To my sponsors and fans thank-you for your messages of support, they mean a lot.  This is a difficult time,” Reed added.

The TwoTwo Motorsports team and sponsors will regroup over the next week and formulate a plan to move forward.

Reed is aiming to return for the outdoor season but that goal will be re-evaluated by doctors post surgery.

Chad Reed and TwoTwo Motorsports are proudly supported by Bel-Ray, Honda Motorcycles, Shift, Etnies, Skullcandy, Fox, Pro Circuit, Factory Effex, Specialized, Showa, Dunlop, Renthal, America's Tire.com, Discount Tire.com, DT1 Airfilters, D.I.D, Hinson Clutches, VP Race Fuels, Matrix, JStar Motors, Dubya and Mechanixwear.

When's Wilson's contract done? Maybe Reed could buy him out and put Deano on the bike for the outdoors. It's an obvious fit as far as I can tell and to me Wilson looks ready for the 450.

I am super bummed for everyone involved. Even the non-Reed fans are going to miss a great title battle. Reed had just turned the tide in my opinion and was changing the way people looked at the races. Before the last 2 weeks we would all assume RV1 was gonna check-out if he got out front, but two weeks in a row is no fluke. Reed finally had his number and now it's all over. Some will try to say that RV was still faster but the replays don't lie. I like RV also. No problem with him at all but I was for Reed all the way. So bummed. Good luck Chad!! It was right in your hands.

With ACL surgery I can't see Reedy coming back anytime soon. With what they do on a track it is literally detrimental to the joints much less a freshly repaired ACL.
Reed has gained so many fans these past few years. At the event in years past you would hear a bunch of boo's from the crowd when he was introduced. Now there is nothing but cheers!!!
Let us see who he puts on his bike while he recovers. Now he can be team boss for a rider under his 22 rig!!!
Get well soon Chad and don't get addicted to pain killers!!! It has to hurt though.

Absolute bummer for sure, only became a Two Two Fan in the last couple years and was very impressed with his Riding and determination this season. Sucks that He will miss most of the Outdoors this season as well. Ripdown I agree that Dean would be a Natural fit and He could definitely hope right on a 450 and do very well, possibly win! Anyway's this is about so Chad heal well, what you brought to Supercross in 2012 will be greatly missed.

He hasn't been one of my favorites by any means but i can honestly say that this really sucks!! Chad was really bringing it to the races and you could see and hear it in him that he truly believed he had a shot at winning this thing, and i truly believed it too!! It was just 7 laps in, but he was already backing up his near win last week and showing the redhead that he was going to be in it for the long haul. I hope your recovery goes well CR and i'm glad that you actually do have a chance at full recovery, as that could have been much worse!! Best wishes!!

Really sorry, Chad. Everything was finally looking good. You're mature enough to know not to rush the recovery. So take your time, and come back stronger. Lay it to em!

PS. Better dial up Tomac. That 450 needs a rider, and Tomac is definately it.

Profile Picture
hamncheeze wrote: 7:26pm February 20, 2012

So bummed for Reed and his team. I'm sure they are trying to remain optimistic but coming back for outdoors seems a longshot given his injuries.

@JE97 - doubt that Tomac will be riding the 22 in SX, he does have a slight elbow fracture and is resting up before resuming the battle for the West Lites. Cole Seeley is highly rumored to be taking Canard's spot on the 450 starting this weekend. I think if 22 Motosports wants a decent rider who is already on a Honda riding a 450 they should give Gavin Faith a chance. Or maybe Billy Laninovich.

Finally don't be surprised to see 22 Motosports with two riders in 2013 and one of them could very well be Deano.

Does he lay there like the rest of us would, and probably just about any pro would do? No! The crazy SOB gets back on his feet takes inventory and you can tell he was debating whether to get back on the F'n bike. Unreal!!! Chad, damn I'm sorry you got injured. I can't tell you how much joy your riding, your team, and just your presence on the scene has brought me. I've been really happy for you. We're praying for a full and speedy recovery. I recently had what is probably a "career" ending injury (as if you can call my riding career-worthy!), and I miss it terribly. But I still love watching the races, and your progression to team owner in particular. I had a torn ACL in 2007 (my free advice-riding with your head down to avoid roost can be a very bad idea). It healed very quickly, and today it quite literally is like it never happend. So keep the faith, I know you'll be back, and I know you'll make good decisions moving forward.

Come on man. Tomac could run with RV for a half lap. U can't compare lap times from 250's to 450's. The track is smoother for the lites and some tracks are just easier to go faster on with the 250. Which in my mind would make the 250 smoker the best SX bike still on most tracks.

Also keep in mind that RV was one of the fastest 250 racers we've ever seen.

What's with all of the idiotic comments i keep hearing about CR riding over his head is the reason he crashed. Is that the only reason riders crash? RV nearly tucked his front wheel in one of the turns and lost his front end when Reed was on his ass, does that mean RV was riding over his head. Last year RV (among others) crashed, lost the front end on more occasions than I can count, does that mean they were all riding over their heads? CR has been one of the most consistent SX riders we have ever seen, and got help it if he hits a kicker that is forming and catches him off guard. I wonder if all of these " he's riding over his head" goons have ever ridden a motorcycle, competitively. You race, you crash sooner or later. it's part of the sport.

If he stops racing right now forever, he still remains a legend with a heart of a lion and will always be remembered.

Whats really to prove anymore? If it wasn't for some bad luck, he would have countless more championship titles under his belt and we all know he is more than capable of winning again. I say stop the racing and for the selfishness of all us fans, be involved with your team as an owner building it into something great for other riders to bloom so that we can still see you hanging around and being involved everywhere. T Hahn would be good, but he got hurt in the second round and still on the mend. Seely will be on Carnards bike soon. Regal, Billy Lanovich possibly. I think give T baker a shot on a 450. My best guess is he will help out a fellow Aussie in Cody Makie. Makie is filling in at Ward racing, but Grants return is very soon so Makies days at JWR are numbered. How about Dan Readron? Some one to keep the bike at the races and sponsors visible.

I really think Reed should take the entire year off. Look at Josh Grant, who had a similar knee injury. He hasn't been a race pace in 2 years because he came back too early. It would be wise to take it slow, enjoy the time with the wife and kids, and hit 'em hard next year.

As for this year, I honestly don't see anyone beating Villopoto for SX or MX. Back to back 2 years running is impressive!

So Bummed. Here's to a speedy reedy recovery.

It becomes more and more difficult to recover with age and family life as is the case for me.....but Chad Reed, you're not fat and out of shape like me so you should be fine!!!!!!

I never broke any vertebrae either, at least not any that got diagnosed.

Good luck REED family - you will be sorely missed from this series.

Dgizzy, are you for real?? Not only is the track tougher by the 450 main, he has to ride a 450, which is a totally different animal in supercross. Tomac would probably get hurt. He may be ready for the Nationals, healthy enough to ride, but I seriously doubt he will be 100%, the ACL is what will be the worse to heal..

Reed and Mitch seem to have a good working relationship and my suggestion for Wilson was for the Nationals not this remaining SX season. Contracts can be bought...

@whatever/mxmofo-- I agree that Reed was the only guy who has a real shot of running with RV all year. Stewart might be there for a race or two, and Dungey maybe if RV gets a bad start, but nothing else. And no way is Gavin Faith (Iowa boy or not) ready for the 450 on Reeds team. Not even close. Reed might not put anyone else on it..

Respect the rider. He was actually thinking about getting back on the bike after that crash, the Dude is a racer can't take it away from him.
My choice BT101 for replacement rider.
Get back quick the sports needs you.

It's really in poor taste to be hating on the guy when he is down. Certainly shows the maturity of some of the people making these comments. Be careful, Kharma is a B*#ch.

Get well soon, Reedy, Shorty, Trey, Ryan and all the others. Oh and Ernesto #10 if you ever read these, we have'nt forgotten about you either buddy!

I hope CR has a fast recovery with minimal suffering and is able to continue his career in a Windham like fashion. But the facts are he was going faster and taking more risk when older. He passed RV in the outdoors and later did his sky fall now in supercross after running RV's speed for a race and one half he has another horrific crash. For 5 races he was 2 to 3 tenths of a second slower and never came close to crashing. Then suddenly he gets fast and in Dallas was the top qualifier and look what happened. Since this repeated from the outdoors to supercross there is a pattern here.
For those that want to argue with the facts about documented timing and performance and insist on luck being a factor then good luck to you when you push beyond your limits.

Preston.... JS is over 40 points behind RV Not a problem, RD does not have the speed ...No problem. For either of them to have a shot RV needs real bad luck and that would be a shame to see happen.

First off, I would like to say that any injury big or small to any rider sucks...but, it is a reality of our sport...riders crash and riders get hurt....Reed has been pretty fortunate to avoid any serious injuries to date considering his tenure on the track to date, so again it is a bummer......

second, and this is just my observation...but to me, Reed albeit on the gas and going for it, did seem a little out of his comfort zone....he was coming into corners really hard and looked to be a little squirelly in some spots....Based of San Diego where Reed had a good ride and caught RV due largely in part to lapped traffic, I think Reed got a little over confident much like Milleville and pushed it a little too much to run with RV....end result, a knarly crash we dont see to often from Reed......It is only round 7 of 17 races, so as Emig and RC stated "anything can happen"....and it did....it may be too late for JS7 as for title hopes (he stayed up and still had a bad night in Dallas), but one bad night for RV and Dungey is right there....a couple bad nights for RV and Dungey and JS7 could be back in it.....

Profile Picture
wrote: 10:45am February 21, 2012

@billc True , but like I always say ,anything can happen , Reed proved that , You dont need real bad luck , just bad luck , to take you out of the series , as far as speed goes , Its all up to James now , hes the only one left , with the ability to hang with RV , as long as he keeps it on two wheels , just my opinion !

Just like at Millville these Honda's are unpredictable, too short of a steering rake, then suddenly they eject you. I hope Chad realizes this and shows up outdoors on a Yamaha.

I was hoping that was a joke cause I think I broke a rib laughing. Anyway I think a tank would have had the same results much less blaming it on a Honda. Maybe he should switch to Yamaha since they're winning everything in sight. Opps, my bad, well maybe if he did he could sit and compare notes with JS about the great bike..

Chad doesn't seem to go down often but when he does, it's spectaculer. It's sad that so many of the top guys are sidelined right now and I think the sport needs him. I have my favorites but I'm more into close hard racing than a run away win. Whenever you ride at the blazing speeds these guys are, anything could happen to anyone of them at anytime. I hope for a speedy recovery to all of our downed riders. Thats my $.02 worth of opinion.

Its too bad this happened at a time when he was on his game and doing things his way.

As for ET or DW riding his bike, no way they have to much to loose. pluse they have contracts. Thats just crazy talk.

CHAD REED! What can I say that hasn't been said on here already. Everyone thought JS7 was the man, but CR and RV have stepped it up to an insane level this year that I, and many of you on here thought was not possible.

RV is my home town boy, and what he did when he was an AM by helping train my Son qualify for the Loretta Lynn Am Nats, lets just say I will always be a fan of his. But to be honest, I loved watching CR put on a show and giving RV a serious run and to be honest CR looked faster. Im thinking he could have got him in the end as he was on Ryan's ass big time, and if you watch the Dallas tape he was making RV flinch here and there.

As for RD5 and JS7, they may get RV one more time on an off night this season, but I was hoping CR would get a few more wins this season as he is sorta doing it as a Privateer/Non factory rider, and on his own terms.

Get well soon Chad, as we all will miss seeing you out there. As for a replacement rider for the rest of the season? BT101 or Kyle Regal is really the only available riders, I think could get it in the top 5.

I don't care for Mike Alessi, but he did look good and fast this week.

Cheers!

Nothing against guys like Billy L but why would reed hire him as a factory rider fill in? As for Will Hahn as one guy said, he already is on GEICO!! You guys are all throwing out these names of solid privateers yet I only see a few recognizing Kyle Regal. CMON GUYS! The guy was riding his own privateer honda and was running like 5 or damn well near it in the nationals and has made it clear he wants to ride hondas. I dont see a better candidate for it. When he was on BTO for the last few races of outdoors he was around 7th all the time and he had little time for testing. You cant judge his indoor results because he was on a yamaha and he made it clear he hated the bike (and so have many others) With that said he still had some top 10 finishes! Reed wont have to pay him nearly as much as he did himself and Regal certainly wont hold out for more. Get real guys. These top guys like Deano aren't going to fill in, especially on another brand!!

well its funny that when JS7 crashes its the bike, but if its a Honda rider crashes its not the bike. the Honda is finicky, it cant handle the power, that is why they have to put a steering damper on it. Brayton had the same thing happen last week.

come on guys...no one helping motomafia out...? moto....a kicker is when on a jump face changes after being used repeatedly....cupping out, which in turn, tends to kick the back of the bike up..hence..kicker! The track can change fast from lap tp lap, 19 other bikes hits the same spot in one lap after your last lap...if you sense that a kicker is developing, you can change lines or sometimes use the kicker to your advantage as long as your perpared. so many things are happening every lap..every section..lappers..etc. I think Chad was busy licking his chops with villo so close in his sites. I hope this helps you mm with your moto knowledge...NYK!!! theres a thought??? Nick Wey fill in?? wouldnt be the first time.

I have seen Ben Townleys name thrown up here a few times as someone who ran with RV. Do you realize that when Townley ran with him, RV was only 16 years old and Townlet was 22, or 21.. That was a world of difference, RV would leave Toiwnley in his dust now.. He is done. Reed will not put somebody on the 22 because it is HIS ride.

Get well soon CR, the races and the interviews will be boring without you! Hopefully KW & RD can get up there with RV and mix it up. The only problem folks with BT riding for Chad will be everyone knows he is a crasher and is fragile. He reminds me of Robbie Reynard, all kinds of talent but injuries plagued his career. And as far as Mike Alessi goes, lets just say that would not work at all. Just when you start to pull for that guy...he shows his true colors ( and his messed up father). And besides he has no chance of running with the last 3, RC, RD & JS or for a matter of fact KW !!!

He also has looked like a completely different rider too. He has always been fast, but lately you can tell he is just loving everything in his program, and just plain out, "Feeling It". Supercross has just become a boring one trick pony since Reeds out. Goodluck healing Reed. At least you can spend time with your family.

hey motohead just saying what everybody says about stewart when he hits the ground, oh he should of not tried that he needs to take what he can get, he needs to rife smarter, well all said reed was giving the fans what james gives us every week 120%, inventing the scrub, jumping quads, wheel tapping, raising that front wheel over the first 4 or 5 whoops, prob the fastest through any set of whoops, reed could of backed off got second, and stayed in the points, theres a big difference between james and reed and im saying this not even being a reed fan, i think what goes around comes around but james and reed are not willing to ride around a collect pionts and take what they can get that why i think dungey and villipoto s@@k villipoto has back it down many of times and dungey shit yeah hes consistant and boring.

Try to stay clear of Stewart cartwheeling out of the way, and for God's sake go faster! push beyond your safety zone it's the only way you're going to see Villopodium.
