Des Moines, IA – Team Dragon Racing Fuels/AG Motorsports/Cernics KTM headed into their first AMA Arenacross season with high expectations and a solid team in the stable. #749 Michael Willard got the team off to a great start as he finished on the top step of the AX Lites class podium.
In the Lites Main Event, Willard jumped out of the gate in 5th and in the confinements of the signature Arenacross track he had his work cut out for him. When the riders settled in for the race, Willard found himself in 3rd behind Moore and Gulley. As the two battled in front of Willard, on the seventh lap the experienced veteran took advantage of an opportunity to move his way into first and then began to pull away. When the checkered flew, Willard had built a 6 second lead to take the win.
“Got a 5th place start in the Lites Main… it was dicey for the first few laps” said Willard. “While everyone was jockeying for position on the second lap, I put my head down and rode the way I knew I could. By the seventh lap I took the lead and didn’t look back. My bike ran spot on and the set up was perfect. It feels great to give Dragon Racing Fuels/AG Motorsports KTM their first win of the series.”
#91 Dalton Carlson made his Arenacross debut and put in a solid ride in the Lites class as he finished 11th in the Main Event and settled into 4th place for the West Region Lites class series points race.
With less than 20 minutes to get ready for the 25 lap Arenacross Class Main Event, Willard had little time to reflect on his Lites victory. Now was time to get back into race mode and bang bars with the top class.
When the gate dropped, Willard got a good start and battled throughout the 25 lap Main Event mid pack. As the race went on, Willard began picking off riders and moved his way to 5th when the checkered flag dropped. After round one of the series, Willard sits 5th in the Arenacross Class series points race.
