Monster Energy Cup Track Revisits Iconic Design
August 12, 2011 2:50pm
AURORA, Ill. – Feld Motor Sports® announced today that 240 feet of the Monster Energy Cup’s track will be built into the stands at Sam Boyd Stadium. The inaugural Monster Energy Cup offers riders a chance to win $1 Million at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 15.
For the first-time ever at Sam Boyd Stadium, the Monster Energy Cup track will utilize a corner of the south end zone of the stadium to create this iconic track element, which is reminiscent of the track design inside the Pontiac Silverdome, that will launch riders into the stands and catapult them back to the floor.
“After meeting with Ricky [Carmichael] and Jeremy [McGrath], we decided that bringing the track into the stands would be a spectacular addition for the riders and fans,” said Todd Jendro, senior director of two-wheel operations, Feld Motor Sports. “The biggest factors for us are making sure this section of the track enables the riders to push the limits of gravity all while encouraging them to pass one another in the process. An event this exciting deserves something special and we are going to bring back this iconic element of the track design, which was made famous at the LA Coliseum and the Pontiac Silverdome.”
Michigan native Nick Wey, who finished 10th in the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross championship, grew up watching the annual race at the Pontiac Silverdome and eventually earned his chance to race there.
“Taking the track into the stands at the Silverdome was truly an iconic fixture at that race,” said Wey. “With the Monster Energy Cup bringing this track element back certainly takes me back to the early days of watching the top pros race into the stands. As a kid, I couldn’t wait to turn pro and race at the Silverdome. This is a great addition to an already awesome race that gives us a chance to win $1 Million.”
Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the official track design announcement, which will feature an interactive 3-D map of the Monster Energy Cup track.
The unique hybrid track will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and for the “first time ever” $1 Million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events.
Tickets for the 2011 Monster Energy Cup can be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, UNLVtickets outlets, online at www.UNLVtickets.com, www.MonsterEnergyCup.com www.supercrossonline.com or by phone at (702) 739-FANS.
