Pro Taper Riders Impress at Hangtown
Leading the Pro Taper pack was defending 450 class champion Ryan Dungey. RD1 came out swinging, taking the opening moto win and ultimately second overall on the day. Ryan came away from Hangtown tied for the points lead, some seven spots better than last year’s championship winning season opener. Dungey’s Rockstar Makita Suzuki teammate Brett Metcalfe made a big splash in his return to racing. The likeable Aussie looks to be back up to his 2010 speed, as he ran up front both motos and came through with a top five overall. Also finishing inside the top ten in the ultra competitive 450 class was Valli Motorsports Rockstar Yamaha’s Ricky Dietrich. The off-road turned moto rider got better as the track got rougher and the conditions got more demanding. Look for Ricky to keep improving as he gets more comfortable with the 30 minute plus two lap format.
One of the bigger surprises of the weekend came out of Pro Taper 250 class rider Darryn Durham. Darryn opened a lot of eyes by running in podium position for the majority of the first moto. Even after crashing and having to restart his bike, Durham managed to keep his Eleven10 Mods Honda inside the top ten. When all was said and done Darryn was awarded eighth overall, ahead of a whole host of factory supported riders. Other notable rides were put in by Nick Wey, Alex Martin, Ben Evans, Heath Harrison, Weston Peick and Bryce Vallee.
Round two moves east to Wortham, Texas this Saturday, May 28th. Be sure to tune in to @ProTaper on Twitter for updates throughout the day at all of this season’s outdoor nationals.
