Sign Of The Lap Times: Indianapolis

Tuesday, March 15, 2011 | 11:00 AM

Round 10 of Monster Energy Supercross from Indianapolis was played out on a super technical track that was very unforgiving in many places. Ryan Villopoto walked away with his third straight win, while on the other side of the table Ryan Sipes was picking up his first. After a long and treacherous Daytona course, things returned to normal in Indy with lap times back under the one-minute mark. Let's comb through the lap charts, brought to you by Motion Pro, to see how it all broke down.

James Stewart was mistake prone early in Indy, but he laid the wood down after a few early bobbles. The San Manuel Yamaha rider set the fastest lap of the night with a 48.295. While Stewart was visibly frustrated with his results in Indy, at least he can take solace in being the King of the Lap Charts.

There was no gift giving in Indy for Ryan Villopoto. The series points leader took the bull by the horns early and never let up en route to his third straight win. RV2 also set the second fastest lap of the night with a 48.433.

Earlier in the day Cole Seely told us that he had about three weeks to get adjusted to the 450. Well, I guess three weeks was all the kid needed because he tamed a very difficult track in Indy en route to a ninth-place finish. Coincidentally, he also set the ninth fastest lap of the night. Pretty solid for his first dance in the big show.

Justin Barcia was on fire at Indy setting the fastest lap of the night with a 49.519. Another interesting fact is that he also set the best average lap mark with a 50.746, yet he came up just shy of capturing victory.

Sipes captured his first career victory in Indy.

Speaking of Ryan Sipes, after a long, tough journey, the likable kid from Kentucky finally reached the pinnacle of Supercross by grabbing his first career SX victory. He also set the second fastest lap of the night with a 49.557 aboard his DNA Shred Stix Yamaha.

Mistakes continue to pile up for Nico Izzi. The Michigan native has had a rough go of it this season, but has continuously shown top speed in practice and the main, but can't seem to keep the mistakes under wraps long enough for a top finish. But if this kid can figure out how to capitalize on his speed, watch out because he could he a top-five threat soon.

@TOMKTM...looking at your other posts it is obvious that you look for any chance to slight bubba. You are a sad, sad excuse for human...

Rv2 deserves this title if he can keep it on 2 wheels
js7 will go down 7 times in this series
cr22 will finish this series 22 pts out of the lead
tc41 will not be racing when he is 41
rd1 will be lucky to get 1 win this year, lucky is the word...

The only way James will win is if he sweeps the rest of the races along with Ryan having one bad night. It could happen, but it's a stretch.

I'm sad because I speak the truth? Or, maybe I'm just not spoonfed this "fastest man on the planet" BS from a guy who hasn't done much in the big boy class for the amount of time he's been in it. I take it I'm probably older than a lot of you guys anyway so I can see why....

No, Short and Alessi are far from my favorite riders. I like Dungey and Villopoto. I actually race off road anyway but am a fan of SX/MX.... if you all must know.

There's more to racing than the fastest lap folks. RV2 has also had fastest laps where he didn't win this year, they are interesting but meaningless, in and of themselves. But if you like that kind of thing, go back and look at some of the 2007 MX times. There are a number of races where the then RV51 had faster lap times than both JS and RC, and he was doing it on a 250F. Check it out, it's interesting.

Banjo Pete wrote: 12:19pm March 15, 2011

Time to add 5 laps to the mains if they can't get the tracks closer to 1 min laps. 15 Minute mains are weak, the fans deserve more and the riders need a better test of their endurance.

No matter how you look at it one thing is really impressive, The top 7 fastest lap times in the 450's are all less that 1 second apart. that deos show the depth of the class this year. It's not over yet!!!

Even the King had a bad year in 97. Who cares how many titles he wins,,,Js7 has done a lot for this sport and will always be remembered as one of the greats. I met him this weekend in Indy and all I can say is don't hate on him until you've met him. James, Big James and Malcolm are all class acts and I have a great deal of respect for that family.
James sits 3rd all time on the wins list, holds many other records and has a combined I believe 9 titles with all the lites stuff. Not too shabby of a resume for a guy 25 years old. Too many people on here full of hate!!

Chase,

You say: "Another interesting fact is that he also set the best average lap mark with a 50.746, yet he came up just shy of capturing victory"

If you keep track of time from the gate drop until the finish line, then the rider with the lowest average time wins. When does "time" begin in this case?

@Voulkg: Lap 2 is when they started recording lap times at Indy, which is the case at most races. So while the majority of the time you will have the winner have the best average lap times, there are times-- like Indy-- when that is not the case. Which is a rare feat, hence an interesting fact. Hope that helps. Thanks for reading.

The thing with JS is he could win out, I don't thinks so But I would not be shocked to see it either. This is far from over, If RV can't stay off the ground and avoid a DNF he should win it. TC is out of it, RD is pretty much out of it at this point, Reed is hanging by a thread too. IMO JS is the only one with a shot (because of his speed)IF he can stay off the ground. Cores one DNF by RV and that all goes out the window.

Ok, let me make myself a little clearer. The KEY in my statement is if Ryan has a bad night. Could be a DNF (as what you said), could be a fourth. My point is 7x3 only equals 21. James will need to hope for much more than to win over RV for the rest of the season. Same as what you said, basically. 'cept I made a statement while you just asked a "what if" question. Also your question gives hope for stewart while my statement (as stated) calls it a stretch. And statistically sir, you are down.

Right now JS is desparate and RV is sitting pretty. No one can argue that when your more stressed, you'll make more mistakes. Look I'm not even rooting for RV, I want James to win because he's too young to get upped by the new guy already, but I'm just calling it like I see it.

"Another interesting fact is that he also set the best average lap mark with a 50.746, yet he came up just shy of capturing victory." - Technically this is impossible. If the average lap time is calculated over the entire race from the start, the person who crosses the finish line first will have the fastest average lap time. Total time divided by 15 equals X. Average lap time would be an interesting statistic if it was reported over 5 lap intervals.

Man these top guys are SOOOO freaking close every race. I mean we are talking "photo finish" close every week.... I can see a race where Bubba and RV are so close at the line we need to go to the replay....lol.... Does the AMA have a replay or phot rule?
