Here they are, the brand new 2011 AMA Supercross/Motocross numbers. You will see a few surprises -- Justin Brayton #10, Tommy Hahn #12, Eli Tomac #19 -- and some familiar digits -- Barcia, Tickle and Wharton all have their same numbers as 2010, yet they are not permanent digits. And let's hope Wil Hahn didn't get #32 tattoed on himself just yet...
Let the bench-racing begin!
Key:
* Career Numbers
** New Career Numbers for 2011
All riders must use the assigned National number for competition as listed.
The current Champion must run the number 1 when competing in the class or region that it was earned. When competing in a class outside of the Championship class the rider must use the assigned National number.

#54.....
I wish some of these guys would hang it up and let some younger guys have their pick, Dowd...Brown..Voss *cough cough*. I'm assuming Hansen is #100, but where is PJ Larsen?
How did so many get to make them New Career Numbers ?? BTsmith307, why should guys have to give up there #? As long as they score 1 point every two years they can keep it. Dowd said he want to try and keep his till he is 50.
I see j flaw gave up 338... Now go away. LOL
I'm just saying there are guys out there giving it their all at every race, every year. Then you have guys like Brown & Dowd who race once a year just to keep their number....seems unfair to the others. Don't get me wrong, they are still fast...but there comes a time to pass the torch.
I bet Matthes cried a little when Deano took Red Dog's number. Both out of sorrow AND joy.
If my math is correct, #4 will be available next year. Maybe that will shake some things up a bit.
May be Dowd races to keep his # but not Mike Brown. Brown is for real and just won endurocross. How about Chad Reed. Now that KTM has signed Shorty, it only right to believe Honda and Pourcel have it together which leaves Reedy out to retire. If not he will have to settle for less pay and go privateer.
@BT, seems to me that if all these young guns want Dowdy and Brown's number, they best show up and put them to rest. Until that time, those men deserve the numbers they earned. Love to hear what you think about the great #4?
Why is anyone complaining about a guy like Dowd racing and keeping his number? It's pretty simple, if you are fast enough to score a point you can keep it. There's something to be said about a 45 year old guy that can score points at the only race he races every year. Plenty of guys can't score a point racing the whole series. Since RC hasn't raced in several years, I do believe #4 would be available now, no? Maybe no one is taking it out of respect....I say retire it.
Why did Canard go higher? And, how come no one grabbed 6?
Trey Canard chose to use his late Dad's #41 for his career # instead of a single digit. That's CLASS.
I thought R.C#4 was up this year? must be 2012...
How can people not like canard? Like that guy is just cool. Always wins with tremendous class and humbleness, stood up for porcel when people booed him even when porcel was still up in points on him, takes his passed away dads # instead of a flashy single didget. All i kno is im a TC41 fan for life
Any clue on how the "new career #'s" work? Ex: #'s 10, 11, and not 12 - huh?
Who cares? Carmichaels' number 4 should be permanently retired
Reebel26... why would they retire #4?... they didnt retire #2 when MC left
dgizzy brown still needs to get a point in MX to keep that #.
I agree the #2 should be retired also. The King should be the only man allowed to run it.
Brown ran the Red Bud National, and did pretty well. If these young guys want that #. They need to go out and take it from them. It will be hard to do. Brown is running WORCS and other big off-road races and killing it. He is still in shape and fast. And anyone who watched Southwick knows what Downd is made of. He still kills on a track.
If I'm not mistaken RV2 asked Mcgrath if he was OK with him running the #2 and he got McGrath's blessing.
I agreed that Dowd was fast, no doubt. But isn't it a little unfair that the ONLY race he does ONCE a year is on his home track that he has ridden at least a thousand times? And who cares if Brown is good at WORCS racing, that has nothing to do with being fast at SX/MX.
clyde935, if RV did not take #2 someone else would have, I believe all he did was wait one extra year to get #2 because MC still had it but was not going to use it any more. So the next year it was avable and He had first pick. I have mixed feelings on retiring a #.
BD its not as easy as going out and taking there #, If they score 1 point every two years no one can take there #.
BD its not as easy as going out and taking there #, If they score 1 point every two years no one can take there #. i kind of wish they would just go back to you earn your # every year, When did the permanet Career Numbers thing start anyway??
I think it started with a request from Carmicheal. He wanted to keep #4 for marketing and familiarity. He likened it to Nascar. I am pretty sure he got it going. He kinda pushed the AMA to consider it. It has its good and bad points I guess. Fans dont have to try to learn new numbers for riders, and its easy for a casual type fan to keep track. And they can market a rider to casual fans easier. I really dont have a preference either way. But I love the idea of the Champ running the No. 1 plate. That should be a requirement. Its funny, if RC just runs the NO.1 and not insist on the 4. he would be recognized just as easy as No.1 considering he never lost that number and could have carried it almost his entire career.
Everyone needs to get their panties out of a bind...the AMA needs to go back to the old numbering system, and that way the riders get the # they earned the year before. This would also be more motivation for the riders and teams to race the outdoors and SX in the same year. Man...I miss the old days!
It is a requierment to run the #1 plate now, I think 2 or 3 years ago they did that. RC started the Not running the #1 plate thing because of marketing the #4.
My suggestion is the top10 are all earned for a season. If a rider chooses a permanent number then it has to be above 10 and if they are in the top 10 they run what they won not a permanent #. While RC4 was recognizable it is history now since he runs nascar, a lap at a national could be done with his initials on the plate. So lets look at history for a second, what # is Hannah? what # is Bailey? What # is Mcgrath? Do you think Mcgraths "King " tile is represented by 2 or RC's GOAT title represented by 4. This is not Nascar and for the record isn't Nascars # system a disaster? let alone the lack of distinction between the manufacturers and drivers . MX and SX should be about the rider. The passing of the # plate would be worth racing for.
Quasi, I think that they retired the #4 ,as a tribute to the goat, someone correct me if I am wrong.
elf846 u are wrong. It will be avable next year I believe.
tp 7 i could not agree more we are not nascar we need our sport to go back to what made it great and one of those things was erned #s
Riders being able to lock in a career number is a great thing for marketing and our sport needs all the marketing help it can get. Any additional sponsorship dollars that can be brought in by making a rider easier to market is a great thing, particularly in these difficult economic times.
I don't think that gives the riders enough credit. if a rider wants a permanent # fine but it should have to be a 3 digit #. I have changed my mind top 100 in the country should be earned not what I posted earlier(only thee top 10)
If you can't figure out who is who year to year, then you need to smarten up! Don't retire numbers. NASCAR is the LAST sport I want to emulate. Its become a circus. MXA will likely show us what number everyone actually earned. How come no 6?
...no #6 because Lammy is going to pull a page from the Dowd playbook and come "earn" his permanent number.
single digits are reserved for national champs only
@ELF846 - Yes, Bill C is correct. RC's #4 retired for 4 years. Announcement was made in spring of 07? That would make 2012 first year #4 would be available. Also, as if anyone is still reading this post...Has Lammy been doing any riding? I haven't heard him mentioned in a long time.
