50+ Riders Entered for Montreal Supermotocross
Montreal - Fans attending the 32nd edition of Montreal Supermotocross presented by Coors Light and Parts Canada, will see four former champions compete in the MX1 class during this annual fall classic. Americans Ryan Clark, Jason Thomas and Nicholas Wey, along with Canadian Dusty Klatt have all confirmed that they will be on track at the Olympic stadium track on October 3. All four will go head-to-head with Canadian MX1 champion, Colton Faciotti, as well as with many other American and Canadian racers familiar to the Montreal crowd. The Quebec contingent will be headed by Tim Tremblay, the highest placing Quebecer during the summer outdoor Canadian championship, as well as other regulars of the Montreal final such as Marco Dubé, Simon Homans and Marc-Antoine Généreux. One of the top competitors of the provincial championship, Kaven Benoît will also participate.
"More than 50 racers have already registered for the main event and the list keeps on growing. We are very proud of this slate of MX1 competitors we are offering to our spectators. This confirms that the Montreal Supermotocross final is, after 32 years, an extremely popular non-championship event for riders from across North America," explained Pierre Corbeil, the event promoter. "Many of those currently registered have a legitimate shot at winning this event, especially since the course, designed by Jean-Sébastien Roy, is extremely tight and very demanding, which should narrow the gap. We will probably have one of the most hotly contested finals in our history" predicted the event spokesman.
Of the four Montreal event champions, it is Florida veteran, Jason Thomas, who boasts the best record. On top of his 2005 win, he has graced the podium on four additional occasions including last year when he finished third behind Jean-Sébastien Roy and Michael Willard. Ryan Clark, a veteran from Arizona who finished in ninth place in 2008, was victorious at Olympic stadium the year before, while Nick Wey, a supercross specialist from Michigan earned his win here in 2004. Dusty Klatt of British Columbia and runner-up in the Canadian outdoor championships for the last two years, has limited experience on the Olympic stadium course. However, he claimed the win in 2006 in one of his rare appearances here.
British Columbia youngster Colton Faciotti, the Canadian outdoor champion for the last two years, could well be on his way to the top spot on the podium. He counts three appearances at the Montreal finals among his list of accomplishments, finishing 16th in 2006, 13th in 2007 and finally in 4th place last year.
The Quebecers: Hardened veterans to watch
Spectators from across the province of Quebec will, at the October 3rd event, have ample opportunity to cheer on their very own, all of whom have vast experience on the Olympic stadium course, with the crowds, the overexcited atmosphere and the risks of being flung into the outposts. Tim Tremblay from Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc in Lac Saint-Jean, returning after a serious injury suffered in 2008, finished the 2009 Canadian outdoor championship in 9th place. He has five MX2 starts to his record at Olympic stadium, along with a single MX1 start since he first appeared at the Olympic stadium in 2003. In MX2, he has never finished further than ninth place. Also returning this year is veteran Marco Dubé. The rider from Bas-Saint-Laurent will make his 13th appearance at the Montreal classic.
Always popular with the Montreal crowd, Simon Homans from Sherbrooke and Marc-Antoine Généreux from St-Césaire, with their respective sixth and 11th place finishes last year, could also find themselves among the leaders. Same goes for the young and talented Kaven Benoît from Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil who, in 2008 just missed by a single place, participating in his first final.
A place in history
The 32nd edition of the Montreal Supermotocross is the longest continuously running event in Montreal. Since its inaugural event in 1977, 1,618,720 spectators have crossed the turnstiles at Olympic stadium to watch such greats as Ross Pederson, Carl Vaillancourt, Jean-Sébastien Roy and other talented riders from near and far. It is one of the most popular events presented in Quebec each year, attracting nearly 50,000 spectators. This year more than 150 participants from Canada, the United States and Europe will accept the organizers invitation to the October 3rd event.
