Unbound Energy’s Justin Barcia Wins His First National

CORONA, Calif. – Unbound Energy-backed rookie pro MX racer Justin Barcia (GEICO Powersports/Honda) won his first-ever pro motocross national, this past weekend parlaying a 1st/3rd two-moto performance in the soggy sand at Southwick’s (Mass.) Motocross 338 into an overall win in the 250 class at the penultimate round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals.
In addition, Barcia’s Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda teammate, Brett Metcalfe, did himself a favor by adding yet another podium finish to his outstanding season, placing 3rd in Southwick’s 250 class and putting some more distance for 3rd place in the overall 250 class point standings between he and Jake Weimer. Metcalfe, who has a team-leading 352 points in the 250 class, is now up on Weimer by 30 points with one race remaining on the ’09 MX Nationals’ tour schedule.
Barcia opened the racing at Southwick with a dominant 1st place performance in the opening moto, passing Unbound Energy-backed teammate Blake Wharton (GEICO Powersports/Honda) on lap ten for the lead and making it stick through the checkers. Wharton would hold on for the third and final podium spot, with Metcalfe in 4th – giving the Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda team its best three-rider moto finish of the season (1st, 3rd & 4th)!
In the second moto Barcia had to battle back from a rough start (17th), doing so admirably en-route to a 3rd place podium finish. The big time effort earned Barcia his first pro MX win of his career as he was finally able to put up back-to-back podium efforts at one race.
“I’m just really excited,” said Barcia. “Today just felt like my day. I woke up in a really good mood and everything just went smooth. I really love it here (at Southwick) and I’m really happy to get my first win here.”
Metcalfe would bring his Honda CRF250R in one spot ahead of Barcia in 2nd place in the second moto, giving Unbound/GEICO/Honda its second dual podium finish of the day. Wharton would falter a bit for 15th, but still made the top ten (7th) thanks to his first moto effort.
With Metcalfe solidly in 3rd place in the overall 250 class standings and Barcia moving past Tommy Searle into 5th, Unbound/GEICO/Honda now has two racers ranked in the top five. And had Trey Canard not been injured early in the season (two moto podiums at Hangtown, first moto podium at Glen Helen), that number would have likely been three in the top five!
Next up for Unbound Energy’s Metcalfe, Wharton and Barcia on the MX National circuit is this weekend’s Steel City MX National in Delmont, Pa., the 12th and final round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals.
