Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto sweeps both motos with teammate Ben Townley nearly as fast in 2nd place overall @ Budds
CORONA, Calif., (June 18, 2007) – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto extended his AMA Motocross Lites class lead through four rounds of the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship, this past weekend taking a decisive 1-1 two moto win over his Monster Energy-backed teammate, Ben Townley.
With the 1-1 effort Villopoto increased his overall Lites class lead over Townley to 14 points, 188-174. The two are so far out in front of the rest of the field the next closest competitor (3rd place Ryan Dungey) is almost 25 points back.
In the first moto at Budds Creek, home of the upcoming 2007 Motocross Des Nations (which will likely pit USA’s Villopoto vs. New Zealand’s Townley), Villopoto shot out to an early lead and never looked back. The Washington native not only led all 17 laps, he also put up the fastest lap time by more than a second over Townley.
“My Pro Circuit-tuned Kawasaki KX250F was the fastest bike on the track,” said Villopoto. “I can’t say enough for Mitch (Payton), Bones (Bacon) and my mechanic in preparing this bike. They put me in a position where it was hard not to win.”
In the second moto Villopoto was equally if not more dominant. The Lites class points leader upped his fastest lap time to nearly two seconds over an also blazing fast Townley, winning the second moto by 25 seconds over Townley – who was almost 32 second ahead of 3rd place Jason Lawrence.
“Ryan was flying today,” said Townley.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is the July 1st Monster Energy/Kawasaki RedBud National, (Buchanan, Mich.), Round Five of the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.
