Lawrence goes 5-4 for 4th overall in AMA Lites class, highlighted by a near last place come-from-behind charge to 5th in the first moto
CORONA, Calif., (June 11, 2007) – Monster Energy-backed Jason Lawrence (Yamaha of Troy) again impressed the legions of dirt bike faithful that follow the AMA/Toyota Motocross Championships, this past weekend rallying from a near last place start in the first moto to finish 5th, then backing that with a near podium finish (4th) in the second moto for a solid 4th overall in the AMA Lites class at Southwick (Mass.).
With the 4th place effort at Southwick Lawrence remained in the Lites class’ top five overall with 101 points and is well within sight of the overall podium.
In the first Lites moto at Southwick Lawrence was unavoidably hung up in the start and ended up leaning over on YoT teammate Matt Goerke’s bike. Up and running again in nearly last place (an estimated 35th out of 40 racers), Lawrence got back on the gas fast and was up into 21st place by the end of the first lap.
“This had happened before and I knew exactly what to do – which was just go balls out,” said Lawrence. “So that’s pretty much what I did.”
Lawrence began picking off rider after rider in the tough conditions (100-percent sand) at Southwick. In his wake lay factory-backed riders from nearly every company, including Honda, Yamaha and KTM. His 5th place come-from-behind finish then set the stage for an exciting second moto, one which Lawrence more than made up for at the start.
“In the second moto I pulled a rippin’ start and came around in 5th after the first lap,” he said. “And I felt like I had the speed to make the podium, at least as far as my Yamaha was concerned. But I ended up making a couple stupid mistakes and it cost me the podium in the second moto. I’m still pumped with the first moto, though. Coming from that far back to 5th was rad.”
Lawrence, a New Jersey native, continues to run the eastern rounds – namely Budds Creek – this coming weekend. Again he’s currently in 5th overall in the Lites class points standings with 101 points. Last year at Budds Creek Lawrence was 15th overall, going 19-10.
Next up for the Monster Energy’s Lawrence is the June 17th Monster Energy Budds Creek MX National (Budds Creek, Md.) at Budds Creek MX Park, Round Four of the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.
