Having already wrapped up the crown in San Diego in February, Villopoto wins one for the hometown fans in the pacific northwest
CORONA, Calif., (April 30, 2007) – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki Ryan Villopoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) put an exclamation point on the 2007 AMA Supercross Lites Western Region title he clinched back in February (17th) in San Diego, this past weekend taking another victory – his sixth in a row and seven out of eight this year – in front of the hometown pacific northwest fans at Seattle’s Qwest Field.
Villopoto had little trouble with the competition on Saturday, winning the second heat race decisively and turning a rather poor start in the Lites class main event into the race lead by lap seven and scoring the eventual overall victory.
“I’m definitely pumped to win this in front of the people here in Washington,” said Villopoto. “Now it’s on to Vegas for the East/West finals.”
Villopoto passed a couple factory-backed racers, Josh Grant (Honda) and Josh Hill (Yamaha) to take the lead. He was also able to get past his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Chris Gosselaar – the early race leader. Note: Gosselaar would go onto finish 5th in the race and 5th overall in the Western Lites division.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round 16 of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile/AMA Supercross Series at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium. The May 5th event will feature the Dave Coombs Sr. Lites Shootout, featuring the top racers from the East and West regions – including Monster Energy-backed champions Ben Townley (East) and Villopoto (West).
