Monster Energy teammate Ben Townley overcomes lap ten crash to finish 7th
CARLSBAD, Calif., (March 19, 2007) – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Darcy Lange took advantage of a late race miscue by Mike Alessi to grab the third and final Eastern Supercross Lites class podium spot at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl, pulling to within six points of overall Lites points leader Ryan Morais in the ESX points chase.
Poised to do equally as well, if not better at Orlando, was Lange’s Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Ben Townley. But a lap ten crash would seal Townley’s fate at Orlando, dropping him back – but definitely not out – of the overall ESX Lites class points chase with a 7th overall. Noteworthy: Townley had the fastest lap time of anybody in the Orlando ESX main event with a 51.673.
Said Lange of his effort: “Overall it was a tough race, tough to get red-flagged on my best start of the year. But I was riding pretty well, making up spots when Alessi went down on the last corner and I just got in there. I didn’t start out to well but I kept racing through the end and it paid off.”
With the effort, including a 2nd place finish in the LCQ, Lange pulled to within six points of ESX points leader Morais, 78-72, with three rounds remaining on the ESX series schedule. Townley’s in 3rd place overall, still well within striking distance of the lead with 64 points.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round 12 of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at Indianapolis’ RCA Dome (March 24).
