Yamaha of Troy racer still tied for 3rd overall in Lites class points
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 15, 2007) – Monster Energy-backed Jason Lawrence (Yamaha of Troy) again made for some exciting racing this past weekend, putting up some of the fastest AMA Lites class lap times with his ‘all-or-nothing’ riding style that’s earning him new fans week in and week out on the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
At Phoenix Lawrence overcame a mid-pack start and began his trademark charge to the front, moving from 8th place after the first lap all the way up to 5th by lap four. Then, on laps five while challenging for 4th place, Lawrence came together with Dusty Klatt and both riders went down – their bikes frustratingly tangled on the ground as rider after rider passed them by.
“I got in underneath him in a corner and he fell on me,” said Lawrence. “Nobody’s fault, really. Just sucked that I couldn’t get up and going right away.”
In all Lawrence’s bike was on the ground for a grueling 12 seconds. When he remounted he was all the way back towards the back of the pack on the lead lap. But the never-say-die Lawrence fought back, quickly and systematically erasing the deficit on his Yamaha YZ250F.
“I’d run some of the fastest lap times in practice so I knew I could catch back up to the front,” said Lawrence.
Indeed, Lawrence had run the third-fastest lap time in the first practice session, just a click over a tenth of a second off the best time by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto. Lawrence again backed that up in the second practice session, which would lead to the confidence he needed to mount his comeback in the main.
“I’m still tied for third overall, so it’s all good,” said Lawrence. “Get back on the podium again this weekend at Anaheim 2, just like I did at Anaheim 1.” Note: Last year Lawrence finished 9th at Anaheim 1.
Next up for Lawrence is the third round of the WSX Lites division this weekend at Anaheim’s Angels Stadium (Jan. 20th).
