Another Top Ten SX Finish For MDK Motorsports’ Nick Wey
Wey pulls holeshot in the main event, only to have race red flagged
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 15, 2007) – MDK Motorsports’ Nick Wey had all the momentum in the world on Saturday night in Phoenix, pulling the holeshot and running with the leaders (Stewart, Carmichael & Reed) early in the race. But misfortune would strike Wey’s teammate, David Vuillemin, who crashed hard in a rhythm section and lay on the track – causing the race to be stopped.
Fortunately Vuillemin would right himself and walk off the track under his own power. Unfortunately for Wey he lost all the momentum he’d gained prior to the red flag and on the subsequent restart came out well behind where he’d started when the initial gate dropped.
“I’m happy David’s going to be all right. I didn’t see it, but from what I heard his wreck was pretty gnarly,” said Wey.
Wey transferred to the main with a solid podium effort (3rd) in the talent-laden first heat race, holding off former Lites class champion Ivan Tedesco near the end. “Felt good in the heat race,” said Wey. “Just about got the holeshot, (I) think Stewart just edged me out. MDK did a great job tuning our motors this past week. I haven’t been able to pull starts like that in a long time.”
In the main Wey got a solid gate pick, then proceeded to pull the entire field to the first turn on his MDK Motorsports-tuned Honda CRF450R, and looked to win the $1,500 Progressive Direct holeshot award (although it would be later awarded to Jeff Dement who pulled the holeshot in the re-start). Running with the leaders, as stated earlier, Wey’s teammate (Vuillemin) went down and the race had to be restarted.
“I didn’t get the kind of start I wanted after the red flag and it ended up costing me,” said Wey. “I lost a lot of momentum, which led to a couple mental errors and ended up costing me in the end.”
Wey wound up 9th overall at the Phoenix main event and is tied with Michael Byrne for 6th overall in the Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series Supercross class.
This weekend Wey’s is back to Anaheim for the second of three rounds at Anaheim’s Angels Stadium (Jan. 20th). Last year at Anaheim 2 Wey finished 10th overall.
